Post by: lilrick on August 08, 2008, 01:51:04 PM
I'll probably be heading up early to help a buddy test on Thursday.  Hope some of you can make it for some professional campfire benchracing and marathon drinking!! :screwy:

Rick don't forget your drinking permit. SCSC doesn't have the lake until Friday noon, (usually), so their alcohol permit won't be in force on Thursday night...........We may also show up for some testing on Thursday, can you bring your cruiser as a safety boat?..........Ray

And hopefully there will be some boats there, NOT like the June race

June race?...Oh, must be a NJBA deal. The only June race for the circles was Burley. Although the boat count was a little low, we still had a good time, even without a drinking permit!! Kern County does require a permit to consume alcohol at their county parks. $25.00 for 6 people, available at the Parks department........Once SCSC has the water permits are no longer required.....Ray

Ha I never been to a circle race before, Looks Like it would be fun to watch. How fast do must of them run? Only a few hours down there. I'll go check them out The lake I go to (kaweah) is already a little puddle of mud.
Title: Re:Circle speeds
Post by: Moneypit on August 09, 2008, 07:20:27 PM
The Nostalgia jets, (and all nostalgia classes) , are held to a limit of 80 MPH. GPS in each boat is checked and excessive speed results in a lap penalty. The Comp Jets are not limited and I seem to remember Ralph cranking out some low 90 MPH speeds down the straights. The other classes run from the low 100s to mid 130s.........It is not the speeds as much as it is the water conditions that make circle races a lot different than the drags. 6 or 8 boats, side by side screaming into turn one can really get hairy :o. The water is a real mess by the 2nd lap in any of the classes. We circle guys like to say that anyone can build a 1/4 mile motor ;D, try making one live for 5 miles, flat out!!!!!! Come on out and get hooked on circle racing. It is very addictive, a real sickness, and there is no cure...... :screwy:......Ray

Thats alot quicker than I was thinking. I raced bikes and than motocross in high school and it is so much fun when you are trying to go all out, worry about track, you bike and than seven or eight fools doing the same thing all around you. If I tried it now I would have to pay for damage ( Thanks mom and dad for all that $$$$) I drive down and cheer you guys on for sure thanks for answering my ??

it was about 1/2 inch....maybe 3/4....it was close....but didnt burn it, but i dont think it even warmed up enough to burn it before it blew  ;D

Brad, it is a $250. fine to POSSESS alcohol at Ming on Thursday WITHOUT a PERMIT. Once we roll into SCSC having the lake it is not a problem......A lot of racers, and non racers are un aware of this BS rule. If preventing someone from getting a BS $250. ticket is throwing the rule book around, the rule book COULD be a good thing, and the difference of some one having a good time, or a bad time.........Ray

Parks dept headquarters in town. About a 10 minute trip........On site rangers do not sell them. I should also note here, INSIDE a motorhome or camper, or trailer is cool, outside, even an ice chest with beer in it will get you a ticket, and they DO LOOK inside if your chest is OUTSIDE............Be safe, have fun.........Ray

the ming races are probably my favorite ones. its always been a great time. looking forward to this one again.

Sorry, a yellow stripe will not match the boat. It may not be fast but at least it is color coordinated. If we race NASCAR style you just hit the pin and turn left and make eveyone behind you put on the brakes - I seem to be missing that peddle.

Am I an idiot? Or is this one of those intiment, quiet things?...Thanks for helping out a goofball.

Am I an idiot? Or is this one of those intiment, quiet things?...Thanks for helping out a goofball.

this is one of the downfalls of the SCSC events that i hope to help with....i do as much as i can with this site with the little time i have to contribute....im very proud that many SCJB members come out to support the compjet/nostalgia jet class. I try to thank everyone that comes out for coming out that i meet or know from the site. Its great that you guys come out and support.

You wont see much promotion of the SCSC events other then the Long Beach Race. You wont see much internet chatter about other then here, the v-drive section on performanceboats.com and over on boatracingfacts.com (a site thats member are mostly the outboard hydros) and on scscracing.com

i would like to see promotions in the local papers of the event locations, flyers made for each event like the one made for the long beach race, etc....it all comes down to time and money which the volunteers of the SCSC have very little to contribute to.

I remember last year i was in charge of towing one of the rescue boats home from the Parker Enduro. I stayed in Havasu the night after the race and towed the boat around town to get some food and make a stop at west marine by windsor beach. I had several people asked me what the rescue boat was for and if there was a race going on. To my amazement, everyone i talked to had no idea the Enduro was going on and were bummed they missed it.....and even more upset it was so near by.....they didnt even know there was 2 circle races a year still at the bluewater casino. I let them know what websites to check for scheduling and would promise I would work with the org to help promote it. If there wasnt fans...then the sponsors wouldnt be interested....then there wouldnt be any racing. lets face it - racing aint cheap and without the fans/sponsors it wouldnt be possible. So again, thank you to all of you who come out and support the events!

Thanks Brad, I guess all of the grass roots small time (no offense, I like it that way) events are just struggling to exist, we (whitewater marathon stuff) have been having these same issues for years and don't know what to try next, the only thing that really comes to mind is a little cross contamination, have each event promote another, I don't know, it seems the Ming races could have been promoted in the Long Beach program, maybe have the next event scheduled for that type of racing promoted while the current is under way?

It seems these events sort of "come and go" so to speak, they gain popularity in spurts, they just seem to die easier than flurish, without people like yourself (Brad) I think events like this would be pretty sad indeed, this year in Southern Oregon really opened my eyes to how close we really are to losing the sport forever, it would be a real shame.

So thanks Brad, and my dad and I will be there, we'll buy Tee shirts, watch some racing, and feel real good knowing we were a part of history.

I'm not trying to be a dick here, but from what I know the CJ/NJ classes are still probationary in the eyes of the APBA.  Between what's gone on this year (drama in LBC, etc) and the low boat counts, how do y'all think the APBA feels about the classes? I know I don't race, but I do know that you've got to be committed to the class, this means show up and race every time there's a race, points or not.  If the low boat counts and BS continue I could see the APBA saying bye bye to the classes.  NJBA has shown interest in hosting these classes but can't get anyone to commit to running a full season, I know money's tight and everyone has family and such but you guys need to commit yourselves to these classes, or they'll be gone and nobody will be happy.

Ok, off my soapbox now
Skip

*though I've never raced jetboats, I have raced land speed racing, jetskis (before there were sit downs) and go karts, no matter the type of racing, it's all still grass roots amatuer racing, no participants=no races.

you are 100% right skip....i couldnt agree more. This doesnt look good in the eyes of the APBA that we cant fill a class we are trying to get on the books. Not to mention I have other personal reasons that i really want this CJ/NJ race at ming to happen.

Personally my situation is complicated why I put myself as "Maybe". I might be starting work soon in vegas and with my boat here, and me working out there. I have no way to work on it. I am scheduled to drop a chevy (2sav - eat your heart out) into the 888 boat this saturday and I have fiberglass work to finish up. I am moving forward as if I wont see my boat after this sunday until ming (the next weekend im scheduled to be in vegas anyways).

so I have to have the boat finished and dialed in by this sunday and hope that I can test on Friday before the race at ming. Not to mention figure out a way to get it to ming -IF- im working in vegas...

I just got an email from Ross....

Quote
Please remind them that their future as a legitimate APBA class is going to be determined by boat count throughout the 2008 season.  This is the last race of the season and probably the most important one (for reasons above).

Thanks,

I am just going to throw this out there and feel free to throw cyber veggies at me if I'm an idiot....

Do any of you guys actually have a "team" or are most of you trying to do it with "one".

I can tell you from experience the "one" thing is very difficult.

I would like to offer up a suggestion that we (you) put together a team or teams to compete for next year, all of the racing I have been involved with over the years relied on the participation of several "racers" working together as a team.

Back before kids, two mortgages, "real job", and the twelve step program  ;D J/K, I was a racer, small time, but a racer, the only way we could do it was with three people, my buddy owned/built a hull, my other freind did all of the controls, safety gear and a cool trailer, and I owned and built the jetpump and motor(s), when a suprise came up it was time to pass the hat...It was fun and we all went racing and had a blast...that being said we were never competitive and spent a lot of time helping out other teams, but that didn't matter to us, we got to go racing three times a year, too cool.

It was sort of like being able to talk the talk and also walk the walk..If you know what I mean, hey we got to go benchracing with some of the fastest jetboat pilots on earth and earned their respect by getting by them on occasion (rare).

I may be interested in getting involved next year, let me know...

Do we know why the boats that are out, are out? Is it a issue of time, parts, or money?  Maybe we can pass the plate around and try to help out a few of the racers.  Perhaps the ones who need the least amount of help to get preped. We need the boat count as stated before. Alot of us have parts lying around that could be lent out.

3 boats have been sidelined/retired
1 boat has a broken motor
1 boat is on its belly getting holes patched  :-X
1 boat is in the shop and might be ready to roll come race day
1 boat is getting put together this weekend - must be completed by sunday
1 boat has a suspended driver
...and a few cant afford it due to personal reasons

we had a team, hence team scjb. we(mostley brad) would get sponsors and put it towards the entry fees, but now sponsors are hard to come by. so i/we just do it on our own. as you know racing is not cheap. oh well thats why i got credit cards :-\

the 410 boat is not ready from going on the rocks at LB
the 53 is a $ thing
313 i think is $ could be wrong
72 on suspension
288 done racing
222 not sure
888 no motor (yet)
lance, not sure about him
812 is a $ thing (entry will be in tomarrow)

i going to ming im a virgin to baot racing! can anyone go in the pit area?

Yes, the pits and the "gate" are wide open. You could even bring a pleasure boat out and pull skiers after the days racing is over. Its all free, and you can even hang out with some of the "prop" boat people. Come by the PS 89 pits and introduce yourself, my name is RAY, and just about anyone can point you towards the "ol guy"..........Hope to see you there, and see below.........

To the CJ racers, this event is critical for APBA consideration about next year. If you can only field 4 or 5 boats it doesn't look good....It is a real shame that one of the most supportive racers is sitting this one out, almost like the class shot it's self in the foot over petty and personal reasons. Maybe Nathan72 could borrow some safety gear from someone that has a broken boat and get a real taste for CJ racing!!! Hey, another boat is another boat, and you NEED boats.............Ray

NO! What's a shame is that the racer you speak of doesn't know how to handle himself in a stressfull/emotional situation.  I was on the ramp and in the pits, I saw the whole thing go down, front row seat so to speak, he was out of line. End.

i shoulda saw this coming a mile away....."poor jim is sitting out and the class is suffering because of it"  ::) ::) ::).....BULLSHIT

Ray - you came up to me sunday morning and told me that you did not condone jims actions on saturday. Are you now taking that back? I dont understand how anyone can feel bad for him that hes sitting this one out. I know my opinion is bias, but if someone did this in your class, i would still feel the same way. You break the rules - you pay.

im sick of people threatening the class saying we are on the brink of extinction....i get it from ross enough, i dont need to hear it from you too. What right do you have anyways to stare down the tip of your nose at us? the class is doing great and we are getting new people all the time...as a matter of fact, this race as 2 (TWO) new racers. how do you like them apples?  ::)

and its not the boat count thats going to get this class in trouble, its the actions that the driver of the CJ72 that will shit can this class so fast. If you want someone to scream at about the probation of this class, go glare down the end of your nose at jim!

Were you also in the seat of the boat that was hosed down with the ILLEGAL nozzle? This whole thing is totally out of whack to what actually happened. What I see in the future of CJ racing is a big zero. APBA has probably decided already that they don't need this class, a class that is hard pressed to fill a class. Read the rule book, a class that has less than XX boats in the previous year will be discontinued, and this class hasn't even been re instated yet. I also had a front row seat to the illegal parts that created this whole deal. The events that happened afterwards were so minor that the racers involved COULD have just let it slide, but no, lets make a huge deal out of it and blow any chance that CJ had to be reinstated. The class is dead due to low boat count, and low boat count is associated with lack of dedication. Read the rule book about illegal parts that gain a performance advantage and the fines and suspensions that go along with cheating. Officials that look the other way over certain things that certain people do are useless to this sport. There have been a few "altercations" among drivers this year, but this was the only one that seems to garner any attention. Sadly, this is the one APBA will look at when they boot the class, kinda like shooting ones self in the foot......

So, luckystiff, tell me all about your involvement with APBA all these years,  tell me about all the races you've attended, all the boats you've built, crewed for, or actually raced.......Why don't you come see me at Ming so we can bench race about all the good times at the races??...............I'm crackin' the brews Friday night in the PS89 pit, this is an open invitation to all here on SoCaljets to stop by for a cold one, and we can talk about next years Nostalgia Jet class.........And Nathan, bring your ski boat, I'll get you on the water...Dave Chandler, (PS855, Mead Snake),the ski racer guy, is bringing his ski and looking for a tow after the days races are over............Ray

ray, you are such a HYPOCRITE!

you came up to me and said you didnt condone jims actions reguardless of what happened out on the course, but now youre thumbin your nose at me about illegal roost!. Illegal roost? PENNALIZE ME! I even told the officials to do so but they didnt have one bit of an issue with it...even then it wasnt intentional - GET OVER IT. Even if it was intentional, and I really did intentionally roost jim, cut him off, and almost crash into toby  ::) ??? ::) what right did jim have to shout obscenities to me and his own crew, then come put his hands on me? the guy is a hot tempered poor sport. his boat is a pile of shit that got lapped by 5 boats in a 4 lap race and he cant handle his temper in a professional manner.

Now heres my advice - get your damn nose out of this class. You have no business even talking down to anyone about this class. You continue to do it and it just makes shit worse. do the class a favor and get lost!

Yes Brad, I did say I didn't condone Jim's actions. He was out of line with both outbursts. I also don't condone you taking this little issue up the ladder. You should have just walked away, kept your distance and let things cool down. As I recall the POLICE were actually called and charges were considered. That is exactly what boat racing didn't need as we're already on thin ice with the LB city council. Now this issue has telescoped into something it really didn't need to be, and because of it the CJ class has one less boat coming to Ming at a time when your class really needs boats. You were wrong to try the angled nozzle, Jim was wrong to react the way he did, twice, and the officials were wrong to look the other way about the hose down. So we have all these "wrongs". Some one needs to step up and do the "right" thing, and put this issue totally out of the picture. There have been other "discussions" between drivers, (about a dozen in 20 years), but those drivers were man enough to keep it between themselves and not create a bunch of drama by getting SCSC/APBA involved. Gee, all of this would have been over in an hour, cooler heads would have prevailed, and CJ wouldn't have a blimish while under APBA's microscope.......And yes Brad, I shall now remain quiet, and say no more on this subject whatsoever........Ray

this is the first time i have heard from anyone about the cops being called and charges being pressed...i think thats another truthless rumor. i asked several people what they thought i should do about the situation...all said go tell the rep. i went to ted and he told me to go straight to ross. dont like it? tough...at least jim isnt getting away with his actions.

Big thanks to everyone who came out and helped and supported the class.

HUGE thanks to terry for letting me use the motor out of the 410, I now know the potential of this boat with some serious big HP in it. We were running mid 80's all weekend then Jeremy made some changes and he picked me up another 5mph. Thanks to jeremy for working on the pump setup.

Also, thanks to Sammy Page at UBS (http://www.ubs.com) for the gas support and funding for the new beast that will be ready for thanksgiving!

im still stumped on that GPS number...suprised mostly since the boat has zero hardware....no loader, rideplate, or shoe.....and just changing the nozzle angle a few degrees picked up 5mph....and not just any 5mph....to jump from 85 to 90 is A LOT of mph gain for such minor changes.

i am almost convinced the GPS lagged or something and it wasnt a good reading.

who knows....i will find out when the new motor is done and we start testing.

I've had Gps do that before on me, not in a boat but on a quad. It's cool, and seems accurate when you play with some hardware, and get a mph here, or 2 there..... but I've had them jump 5-10mph, and you know you can feel that much more speed. Only best way is to try it again and check it, shit I've even had them been wrong 2 times in a row.... but if you had another heat you could seen if it was the change or just the gps

From standing on the shore and seeing the diffrence in how the boat handled before and after the changes , I think it is 100% possible for you to have seen a 5 mph diffrence! I guess you had to see how I did to understand!
