I aquired a motor from skip a few weeks ago and not sure what I am going to do with it just yet. Since money is tight.....i figured i would do a budget 460 project with it.

My goals:

• Spend as little as possible

The cash counter is set to zero....and only goes up based on money i spend from here on out, it does not include parts i currently own or that have been donated, only out of pocket expenses related to the motor itself.

I am not a mechanic by any means, so that means i have no idea what i am doing. Only 460 experience I have is with my previous motor. So that being said, any suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated.

The motor: $100 + 2 SCJB Shirts

This is a D9TE-AB block. Skip only gave me a little info when I picked it up. He said it came out of a flat bed pickup that was out on a ranch and was used to haul hay around. The truck was totaled when it hit a pole, but the motor was still running. I have no idea what the heads are...there are no markings anywhere other then a ford logo by the valve springs.

So tonight I started breakin it down......this motor is a fuggin mess!

check out the slack in the timing chain....

Does the balancer spacer have a wieght on it ?
I have two pair of BBF heads like those one is a D3 and the other is a D4.
They are 91 - 95 cc combustion chambers

just smooth and blend out all signs of cracks. You can dye check it latter.

brad, love the play by play action thus this means i am one day behind you doing the same have a 460 w/dove block and dove heads, please go day by day i will need it since i really dont know anything about motors except when you here clicking and rattling turn off immediately oh skip you should of got a bakers dozen of those choc chip cookies she made on the other thread thanks brad

nope....there is holes in both sides and the bottoms....one side of the rails is trashed...and the windage tray is destroyed...

just to carify....this project is for the hell of it....for fun.....many shortcuts will be taken to cut costs...so this project might not be one to follow dirk

That is too bad. I have destroied my pan a bunch and it seen we can always fix it, using parts from stock pans and some small plates. How much do you want for it ? Lucky stiff has 7 .030 TRW L-2404s and a set of 7 cj/truck rods.

Brad, if you really want to install that high mileage engine which has bearing clearances possibly as little as 0.0008" (that's right less than 1 thou, and no I'm not kidding), and then spin it at a sustained 5000 rpm...then don't complain if you end up with a second grenaded engine on your hands.  No saying it will absolutely happen, but it very well may happen.

We will accept your non-disassembled longblock as a core trade-in toward a fully rebuilt jet boat applicable 466-472 pump gas frinedly 400hp-550hp engine, should you have a financial windfall this christmas.

thanks for the offer paul, but its just not realistic to come up with that much money in 2 months.....so im going to run with what i got and have fun with it....if it dies on the water....oh well, i got out there and did something rather then sitting on the shore counting my pennies.

again, i want to state this is for fun...im not looking to unleash ass whoopings with it....i just want to get back out on the water while i save up money for a built motor.

On one of my builds (granted for a car but hey), I pulled the 250K+ miles 440 engine out of the 72 Imperial, changed the rings and bearings, new oil, threw a 200 shot on it and raced it and used it as a tow vehicle for 10 years. Sure there is a little piston slap on really cold mornings, but it runs just fine thank you.....

The factory stuff is more durable than people give it credit for. Those cast pistons are doing fine...

Cam, lifters, bowl blend,port match, polish combustion chambers,valve job w/ springs
3 blade hone from NAPA, Polish the crank to reasonable clearance, rings

Yea, but that's after $1000 and 40 hours of work. I think Brad wants it to be done FAST and CHEAP lol
