-
Not one 460 BBF came with 4bt mains, they don't need it.

cool im picking the motor up tomorow night and will have it in the boat by saturday hopfully we can get some more warm weather soon so i can get my boat out on the water

thanks Emanon Performance Marine for the great info

Since it's a fresh rebuild you had better make sure it was rebuilt for a marine application and not for a car or truck, otherwise it won't last you very long at all. ;)
-
The biggest concern is your piston to cylinder wall clearance. We usually run .003 more in a marine application. I have seen quite a few guys run automotive clearances and get away with it, but I don't recomend it.

We ran into this problem when we first got a 454. Water in the oil led to throwing a main. We rebuilt it, and had the same problem with water blow-by, minus seizing the motor this time. We retooled with a 396 b/o 402 with much tighter clearances. I really think this a tried and proven theory and a big mistake made by a lot of people using automotive specs in marine applications.

ok i picked up the motor . it was super clean . i met the guy who built the motor at the machine shop . the motor was supposed to go into a hot rod but he ended up not needed it he said he went throught the whole engine you can tell everything inside the motor was new i think i got a good deal for 500 bucks. the last motor i had got water in we are not sure how my friend said it came in thorought the exhaust flap when iwas backing the boat up to fast . the guy said who i bought the motor from said it should be fine in my boat because he built the motor for a hot rod
i guess only time will tell. worst case it last me a season and ill have all winter to rebuild it . i dont plan on running the engine to hard
ill have it in the boat by this saturday hopefully ill p ost a video of it once i get it running
here is the post

how did you get water in your oil ?
-
I understand its a common problem with BBC/BBF motors not built to marine specs. We got water in the oil from too much pressure going into the headers. the water shout up into the heads. We got a Basset reducer and made a manifold to control flow to engine and two headers.

A friend of mine had a lot of engine work done on his Elininator by a marine jet drive pro. The mech installed a water control valve next to the driver's seat. Whenever his engine is below 2000 RPM he shuts the valve off.
I've also seen, with success, a water pressure regulator on the engine's water inlet from the jet drive. I've heard jet pumps put out about 200 - 300 psi, cars only have ...? what 14 lbs @ 200 degree's.
My Roger's, if I ever get started on it, is going to have thr-transom exhaust for the kid's sake. I'm going to use a water pressure reg. on the engine. Home Depot.

that might be the problem . only problem is i have no clue what a water regulator looks like and wich one i should bye for my boat anyone near riverside have one installed on there boat i would really like to see it .Im trying to make the boat somewhat reliable and anything i can to make sure it does not break down ill do but i am on a budjet . or ifyou have some pictures that would great
everthing is going to be pretty much new the starter altanotor water pump everthing so i want to do everthing i can

is there a certian size i should get
thanks for all the info the motor going in tomorow and if it doesnt rain ill have i back on the lake withend a few days to break it in+

I can't find my jet's water outlet right now so you're going to need to measure yours to figure out the size. ???

Not one 460 BBF came with 4bt mains, they don't need it.
I just want to clarify that 429/460 blocks were available with a 4-bolt main, but certainly not a 460 specifically (only in the 429)...nor were the 4-bolt mains used in the marine engines.
Indeed, the 2-bolt blocks are very strong and 4-bolt caps are not needed in almost every case. Finally, 2-bolt blocks may be converted to 4-bolt caps if absolutely necessary, such as in a blown nitro deal.

ok the motor is finally in the boat ready to go
we tried to start the motor last night but i think my carb needs to be rebuilt because its just dumping fuel and fluding out the motor so im going to get a new one today along with with a new distributor and see if i can get it to fire
the timing seems to be set right
is there any thing else i should look at

Don't those two above statements say exactly the same thing about 460's?
-
they are both right they did not have 4 bolt mains in either the only dif between a 429 and 460 is on the crank

i could be wrong but i beleive that the pistons were different specifically the pin location.

I have two D0VE blocks. The one currently in the boat has a two bolt main. The SCJ block sitting on my stand has a stock 4 bolt main.

Hi Brad,
I know this is an old post but thanks for the link. My Miller has a BBF 460 and this might be a good place to find out some general information.
Thanks,
Greg
