Do I need it? Machined surface to machined surface.

Cannot say it works this way in every case but have no gasket between the bowl and droop on mine.  Just use thin layer of silicone.  Never leaked.  Have had it apart and back together a few times.  Need to be sure the surfaces are clean.

on the cruisers i run bowl/wedge/wedge/rooster booster/wedge/nozzle adapater  ....not one gasket. ....all aluminum wedges. i dont have any problems.

i also run the booster on the race boat with a wedge combination, no gaskets and no problems

you dont HAVE to....you might get a little spray, but it doesnt hurt anything.
