Title: Eliminator Sprint
Post by: propless on April 02, 2008, 11:04:34 PM
 Ok, here we go !!  This is my new 1973 Eliminator Sprint.  I bought the boat from Busby last Sunday and had lots of fun  :banghead: getting it home .  Its a project , with a few small issues, but I love the shape of this hull and it was cheaper/easyer than doing the work to convert my Lancar from the Jacuzzi YJ to a Berkeley pump.
 The plan is to use parts from the Lancer (motor,etc.etc) and parts from my collection  ::) to get this thing done in time for the Parker trip ( about 2 months ) .  Its going to be a 2 seater (I have no kids and my friends/leaches can buy there own boats  >:D) I got tired of people showing up empty handed and with empty pockets wanting to go to the lake.
 Its home
[attachimg=1]

 My first step was to get the old carpet out and see what I have to work with.

[attachimg=2]

 I was a little confused as to why the inside of the bottom was smooth ( no sighns of the strakes ) so I started sanding off the old glue and paint and found this !!  Wood floors  :o .

[attachimg=3]

 So now I need to decide if I'm going to show the floor  ;D or carpet back over it :'(  ?  The stringers are going to show / no carpet .   Day 2 and I'm behind schedule already  :-[ .

i would sand down to see the wood to check for any discoloration in the wood....(delamination)....and then i would show the floors.....i love balsa floors.

it baffles me that people actually carpet over balsa floors...why?!  ???

Show the wood if it's good, if not carpet it for this year. My boat is supposed to have Balsa floors but the guy before me said that he carpeted the floors because they were so slippery.  :sly:

  Thanks guys , I agree.  I love the look of the wood floors.  But its not the carpet that scares me as much as the 2 layers of paint under the glue  >:( .  I guess I see lots of sanding in my future, because I realy want the wood floor to show.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that i dont find any big ugly delamination spots.

If you want to find discolored wood start sanding towards the very back or at the very front where water wood sit at.  ???

The previous owner had carpet, and had used some SERIOUS glue to hold it down. I think it was tile adhesive (or at least I swear it was something close).

I got pissed and took the easy way out. If you have the time and tools ... it would look great with sanded floors, I do not think yoiu will find delamination ... if you do, it will be very small.

BB

p.s. ... looks like a good start

I say carpet it and leave it for the summer. Remember the sun is out and I don't see any rain in my forcast and I know you live about an hour from me. Sanding is for winter time when it's raining and there is nothing on TV.

+1  you'r gonna spend two weeks if not longer just prepping the floor, there is ALOT of glue and paint to sand down!  And just like waxing a car, you dont realize the size of the job till you start and then its too late to stop :banghead:

I say carpet it, and put that thing of beauty in the water ;D

At least one of our boats has to get wet ;)

+2, save it till the winter, run it this season and find all the things you want to change and make a list, then you have the winter to get it done, can't wait to see that thing in parker ;D

2sav you better be kidding about selling your boat  >:( !!!!

  Tonight was the night to go after the spots that scared me the most ( do the worst parts first and the rest will be easy, right ? ).  This boat origanaly came with fiberglass fuel tanks and it looked like thay realy didnt want them to move.  The remnants of the glass that mounted the tanks was still down there along with a realy thick coat of resin (at least 1/4in) running all over the place for no reason.
 Its realy not as bad as it looks in the pics , the dark areas are the areas of the thick resin (so thick it looks amber colored)
[attachimg=1]

 This is how thick the resin/glass was that mounted the tanks .  Luckily it didnt bond verry well to the hull.
[attachimg=2]

 Btw. there is somekind of gooey layer under the glue and paint on the floor, its black and clogs up sandpaper as fast as I can change it  :banghead: . Looks like somekind of undercoating the orig owner may have sprayed on or maybe its just glue , who knows at this point .  The good news is its under all the other lavers, and I was able to strip it all off at once by useing a scraper, with out doing any damage to the glass .  It came off kinda like scrapeing a gasket  :-\ .

That looks like a biatch of a job. I want to do the floor in mine also. Keep on keepin on.
Title: Re: Eliminator Sprint

 Change of plans  >:( ,  The floor is ugly.  Its not the pretty balsa stuff , it looks like plywood  :banghead:.   So, it gets carpet again.  And the stringers have lots of old holes from the original seats and stuff from over the years that need to be pluged , so I dont think thay will be to pretty either.  I think I'll just paint them black.
Title: Re: Eliminator Sprint
Post by: propless on April 06, 2008, 10:28:23 PM
 Well I fixed the delaminated spot on the stringer today.  I cut out the bad spot, the wood was still fine (solid).  Than I ground back the good glass and reglassed that area, looks ok and sounds solid again  ??? .  I still need to go through and plug/fill all the old holes in the stringers.

[attachthumb=1]

 This is the main reason Im going to paint the stringers !!   STAPLES were used to hold the carpet at one point in its life.  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:  Thay were not from Brian/Busby, thay were under the paint/glue.

[attachthumb=2]

 Now for a question !
 I'm a little confused about were to place the motor in this boat.  In my old boat the back of the motor is 16'' from the transome, but Brian said he had his motor 30'' from the transome in this boat and it liked it there.  Of course he had something like 1700 HP (blown alcohol motor) and I will only have around 500 to 550 for now.  So what do you guys think would be a good place to set the motor ?   I dont mind it being forward , its only going to get 2 seats and one fuel tank (between the stringers behind the seats) .   Some people say set the motor as far back as possible, yet at the races I noticed some boats like lilricks with long driveshafts and the motors set forward  ??? ???

Only from what I have been told and read...

Drag boats usually will place their engine towards the back more and circle boats more place the engine more towards the center of the boat.

... whatever that's worth.  :-\

did you get the dolly trailer with the boat? never mind i remember about the fenders coming off on the freeway

I would put it at about 25" ... putting the motor forward will assist in getting the weight off of the back of the boat, placing the center of gravity (CG) forward more. Back in the day (70's and 80's) drag boats used to have to "fly the nose" to air out the boats for less drag. Now we have learned that moving the motor forward and changing the hardware, it will allow the boat to run flatter while still being able to create enough lift to have little to no drag.

So, be it a circle jet or drag jet, having the motor forward more and as low as possible will be better for the CG, therefore making it a safer and better handling boat.

did you get the dolly trailer with the boat? never mind i remember about the fenders coming off on the freeway

That's the same trailer, and it's still set up for being a dolly ... he just needs narrower axles  ;D

Looks good Jeff!

The motor in the Liberty is 26" from the back of the transom. If Brian says 25", go for it. Just remember, you may have to build your owm driveline, and if you plan on BIG horsepower in the future.....Well, build it big.(1350 u-joints) The big u-joints make the drive line really easy to remove also!!

I put them on my Hydro trailer and the Hydro's axles onto the Jet trailer.

Dycorp in Anaheim sells them for something like $125 each? They sell all the parts needed to do the swap, I'll come by and help if you want ... super easy.

 Thanks Brian and lilrick.   Funny thing is, I was thinking about putting it around 25/26''  or maybe a little more just because of the header length.  I guess Rewarder made them the right length  ;D. Thanks for the info, its nice to know Im on the right track !!   And yes thanks for the tip, I will use the 1350 u-joints, I dont need to have problems later.

hmm, i need a dolly trailer, where are the axles?
Ralph, this trailer has some realy cool hidden features  ;D  Brians "crew" made the swing-away tounge and inside of it there is still the reciever for the long dolly tounge, and this cool little wheel piece plugs right in too.  Verry cool !!

[attachthumb=3]

 About all I got done tonight was to drill and plug all the old mounting holes in the stringers , I drilled them all out to 1/2'' and pluged them with 1/2'' dowels dipped in resin (had to use a hammer to tap them in) .  Next thing to do is grind the outside a little and glass them in.
 Its not much but its progress  ;)

Just a thought when plugging holes I was told to mix in some cabosill in with the resin so it fills in the cracks n such.  Cabosill (sp????)  Thickens up the resin so it is easier to shape, and stays in the hole better. It makes the resin the constancy of peanut butter depending on how much you mix in.

Yeah ... Cabosil is a lightweight silica thickener used to reduce the flow of epoxies on vertical surfaces, as well as filling pinholes & holding plug in place ... they created it for the aircraft industry back in the 50's.

Mix it into your resin mixture to the consistancy of pudding and it will give you a nice sandable filler (once cured) to put in holes along with the dowel plug.

Looks good Jeff ... now you need to block out those stringers and paint them glossy black! Blacked out stringers are sick!

 Yea, thats the plan for now.

 Not much new to report.  Just sanding away and removeing glue still  :( .  But I did pick up these today, 8''x50'', a little smaller than I wanted (about 11gal each I think) but the filler necks line up perfect with the spot on the hull where the old caps were.

 Thanks for the suport guys !!  Its been a tough weakend.  Hes going back to the vet in the morning (not doing well) , but enough about that, I dont want to cry every time I look back at this thread later if things dont go well.  :'(

 I did take some time and work on the boat today. I cut some LARGE drain holes in the stringers (nothing should plug these up  >:D ) .  The great news is this thing has some realy solid stringers .  This always seams to be a trouble spot on stringers and these were perfect (no rotten wood)  ;D .  Its amazeing to me thay have lasted this long and are in this good of shape, this thing is a 73 ( its older than my last 3 GFs  ::) )  And I'm almost done preping the stringers for a new coat of glass.  Now the floor is another story  :screwy: , thats takeing alot of time because I want to start fresh (so many old coats of glue and goo) .

Two months to go till Parker, and The Old School Eliminator's commin ta get ya 2sav  >:D

 drain holes
[attachthumb=1]

 stringers, almost ready for glass. no more holes  ;D
[attachthumb=2]

 Another question !!  This hull has no crossbrace between the stringers (front of bilge area).  It looks like it had one in the past , maybe Busby removed it because of his motor placement.  Should I replace the wood one ???   I will be running a verry strong rail kit in there (full length rails) and could add some crossbraces to that  :-\

Looks real good. I don't think I've seen a V bottom jet boat not have one of those cross braces just ahead of the engine. A friend of mine has a Eliminator and it does have a crossbrace. No plywood/floor in it though. Flat bottom v-drives, my tunnel hull, most tunnel hulls, do not have a cross brace.

I took it out because I wasn't going to be running on the river with it, it was going to be less than 30 second passes in it.

I would glass one back in. It won't be a structual piece, more of an insurance to keep water/oil out of your carpet in case of a motor issue deal. (hopefully that won't happen)

Having the bilge board will keep any water where it belongs ... in the bilge area (make sure you drill a 3/4" hole in it for a removeable transom plug)
Title: Re: Eliminator Sprint
Post by: propless on April 27, 2008, 08:11:23 PM
 Update !!   The glue is all off the floor.  ;D ;D  I hate carpet glue/contact cement  !!!  This was a horrible job (removeing it), the glue was at least 1/4 in thick in places and buried under what I think was a layer of ruberized undercoating :screwy:.  There is still some left on the sides but that wont take long to get off  ::).

  Its dusty but its makeing progress , I think .
[attachthumb=1]
I'm still undecided about what to do with the floors  :-\ .  Some parts look ok and other parts look cloudy (thick layers of glass  ??? )  and the whole thing shows shiney strands of glass when you get it wet in the sun .   :(

I've heard of people complaining that wood floors get slippery when they're wet, I dunno I've never had wood floors. A great looking wood floor looks great.  :screwy:

I've had carpet, carpet with GM engine's.  :banghead:  Oil will weaken and stain carpet.

 Yea I know ,  but sometimes I get something in my head and just cant give-up on the idea  ( wood floors ) .  I just hate the dirty oily carpet in my old boat !!!  And the wood is sooooo pretty.  Someone told me it would be easyer to add a wood vaneer (sp) over the old stuff and that sounds like a better solution for this ??  What do you guys think ?   It looks like to be able to show whats there I would have to strip off all the old glass and reglass the whole floor and stringers (not going to happen).

My vote would be to black out (paint or flow coat) the stringers, bilge, bulk head and transom and carpet inside/outside the stringers with grey carpet. Of course you'll need to add a bilge board between the stringers at the front of the engine area ... black that out too  ;)

Well look who came to visit  ;D.   Whats up Brian ?  Do you miss your old baby ?   Sorry but the red/orange/yellow strips are gone now  ;).  And trust me you should have removed all this old glue and extra resin along time ago (it would have been faster  >:D) .   I dont know what this thing weighs but it is alot lighter than my old boat , I noticed today that it wasnt quite centered on the trailer .  So I just grabed it by the opening in the transome for the pump and picked it up and moved it  :o

Btw, Brian do you have any old pics of it back when you ran it ?

Yep, that is some heavy duty aluminum thats for sure. I picked up some for some rail kits that I will be making. Sure was a shame to cut it up for scrap. I probably cut up 400' of it but I stashed some in the shop just in case ;)

 Thanks to Billy / ironman I got some work done today, he came over and made me get off the couch  :-\ .

 The dash needed some help !!  It was set up for center steering, and when I removed the alum pannel I could tell it would never be strong enough to survive.  With the original holes and the last set of holes the dash looked like swiss cheese  :banghead: .   So out came the power tools  >:D .   I cut the glass from the back, and removed the old wood (not fun) while Billy and Mark / Sanger Pete supervised. After a few hours of cutting and hammering and sanding the dash wood was gone and it was ready for the new wood.  I cut and trimmed a piece of scrap wood I got from my neighbor (the wood worker) .  Than I went to get the glass matt and resin and remembered I used all the matt on the bulkhead  :banghead: .   Oh well, done for the day, but ready for the next day  ;) .

Your is already done, I saw the pictures.  ;)

;) The back side is all glassed in, just some trimming left to do.  It cost me one t shirt and some hair (fu##### resin) but its done. now I just need to do some filling and smoothing on the front.

 Just so you all know, this is the worst job I have ever done !!  I had resin running down my arms and all over everything ,  What a mess !!  Next time I'll flip the boat to do a dash !!  :mad:  No, on second thought,  I will never do this again !!!!

 I don't know, but I did find some info that says this boat is not a Sprint, the Sprint name came later  :-\ , and I was right about it not liking rough water.  This is no circle boat !!  It needs smooooooth water,  just like I thought.

 It might be awhile before there is any more progress on this thing, I'm getting tired of looking at it and need a break (way to much of the 2 steps forward and 3 steps back going on  :banghead:) . Looks like I'm going to stick to the swimming pool this summer  >:( >:(

Mind takin a few measurements?  ;D

From dash to tip of bow, and possibly from the bottom of the transom to the top.... if you don't mind

 Here you go ,

overall length = 18' 3" (not counting the plates)
tip of bow to back of dash = 8'
bottom of transom to the start of the curve at the top = 19.5 "
and as close as I can measure its a 10 deg V (+or -) at the transom, but it looks like there is less of a V as you move forward (the entry is almost like a flatbottom).  :-\

I really don't think this hull is a copy of anything, I have never seen anything like it (the rocker bottom).

2 steps forward and three steps back.............. I feel your pain bro, Ive been dancing those steps for the last year :banghead:  Taking a break is mentally healthy ;)

 Well this isn't real progress but I did something today.  I modified the patterns for the motor plates to fit in this stupid boat  :banghead: , now Billy can use the modified patterns to make a custom set that will work in this thing (just have to wait for some open time on the water jet) .  This hull has some really weird angles in it, and I set the rails to high  :banghead:, so a custom front plate is needed.

 But I like what I'm seeing  ;D ;D

Hey Propless
Looks to me like you're making good progress--easy for me to say. It amases me how the mind works--when you finish, you're going to have so much fun talking about the project and spending time at the lake that you will forget all the depressing negatives (late nights, itchy fiberglass, things that won't fit, blown budget, ...) while putting it all together. In fact, you'll probably think about how much fun it was to build your own boat, and when you will do it again. Ask me how I know this to be true.

No raggin', just encouragement. I'd really like to see that boat running next month.

 Well lets not get crazy now.   I like that one, looks like something I'd drag home   ::).  Lots of potential there, just needs a few parts and a little cleaning  ;) .  I think I saw that one on craigslist a while back and thought about it, but had to many projects already.  ;D
Title: Re: Eliminator Sprint
Post by: propless on July 05, 2008, 02:54:26 PM
 I have new parts !!!  ;D ;D    The motor plates are here and they fit.  I just put them on to check and make sure all the holes lined up and the starter was good (this is the first set of BBF plates Billy/ironman has made) and every thing looks perfect !!  ;D   Now I just need to use the patterns I made to transfer my cuts onto the new plates and start cutting them to fit the boat.  Should be able to have it in the boat today  :o :o .  But than I will still take it all back apart one more time to polish everything and do the final finish on the floors.

 Also got all my new parts from Jet Boat Performance this weak, new steering, new cables, really cool transom fittings for the cables, steering extension, angle mount for the helm, pto, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc,,,,,,,, it was a long list . ::)  And I'm sure I forgot something (good thing shipping only takes one day to get to me  ;D) .

 Here's some pics of the motor plates ( I think these plates might be tall enough to work in tunnel boats too,  I should go measure the Daytona  >:D). Billy makes them with lots of material on them so you can trim them to fit anything.  And just wait till you see the flex plate cover hes making for me (its sooooo cool !!!)

[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]

 Just as a side note, I found out that these BBF crank pulleys are two pieces and if you only need one belt you can separate them and have a single groove pulley.  There are a couple small spot welds , drill through the back side of the pulley on the welds (just drill through the unwanted pulley, not all the way through) and use a chisel to separate them  ;) .

 Its just bare alumininumum for now  ;), once everything is cut to fit and mounted and double checked three times I'll pull it all out and polish everything  :screwy: .  I know it will be a bit** the keep it pretty but I like it  8)

Now I'll have to go look at mine and think about making that change.  I hate the extra pulley there, it looks like you forgot to put it all together.

As long as I'm being a post whore today here's some shots of the motor , IN THE BOAT !!!!!  :o :o :o The plates are all cut and trimmed up , I'm just going to wait for Billy to look at it and double check the angles before I drill for the mounting blocks.  Better to check ten times than have extra holes  ;) .

Nice work!. Hey, when your all done there, come on over, I got a couple of "tasks" for ya! ;)

If you're going through all of the plumbing trouble of an oil filter relocator, it is a killer time to add an oil cooler! :sly: You may not need one but it lets you run the engine a little warmer while still keeping things under control.

IMO it depends how hard you run'em and for how long...

 I thought about an oil cooler, but I really don't want to go into the motor right now to up the oil pressure (pumping losses from all the added length) , but I think I'll be ok with just the remote filter as long as I keep the lines short (might put it on the front of the front motor plate  :-\).

As far as how hard I run it, well, lets just say it doesnt have an easy life  ::)  ;D .  But it was built to handle me, and I only run it hard for a short time.

This is from when it was in the old boat  :o :o  >:D  MIGHTY BBF POWER BABY !!!

Well, maybe on my SBC I'll go for the tough parts just to make sure it all holds together.  I know, it's a Chebby but I think it will do the job I want to accomplish.  Once I've reached my goal with that, I'll sell it and get another BBF, if I can find one in decent shape and a good price.

 Thanks Ralph , I didn't think of that.   My stringers are 26" apart, but I used 2 1/2" angle for the rails. So I have 4 3/4" +/- room for a filter, I could also just notch the rail a bit  :-\ .  But it did always bother me trying to change the filters when there angled like that (I'm messy and I always fill the filter with oil before putting it on ::)).    Ive seen the cheapy adapters come apart too, but I cant remember witch ones it was that are junk, might just break out the credit card and go with the billet stuff to be safe.

yeah it used to be messy for me too, until, Josh at JBP told my dumb ass to put the filter in a bag then take it off :banghead: :banghead: damn why didn't i think of that ??? (thanx Josh ;))

and on the race boat i still had to notch the rail to allow the hose to come off the filter pad

see the pic above
the filter is from peterson =pricey
filter pad is from earls =not so bad

you dont have to get the parts from there, just make sure the peices are billet.  Tom at JBP could probably get them for you at a fair price

Can't remember the name of the company, but they make a really cool stringer mounted alt bracket for Vee drives, I'm going to grab my old catalogues and find it. Vee drives sometimes use this setup. I really want to say its Glenwood, but fuzzy memory.

That's Badass, looks totally like it belongs there. The only change I think I would have made would be to flip it around to make a shorter path fo the electrical and protect from the belt a little better, (opinions are like a**holes, we've all got em).
Title: Re: Eliminator Sprint
Post by: propless on July 13, 2008, 04:56:28 PM
 If you mean flip the alt to the front side of the belt, I thought about that  :-\ .  But I want to make somekind of driveshaft hoop and it would have been it the way.  The drive shaft is long enough to reach the hull when conected to the motor and that scares me  :o :o .

MyBadd! continue on sir!

Here is a ruff sketch of the hoop we have used in the WW boats, bolts like a motormount to the rails.

Uses a 3-1/2" 1/4" wall piece of aluminum pipe around the shaft, worked sweet.

That's a great idea GT Jets !!!   I was thinking something similar but without the pipe, but I really like the idea of the pipe  ;D .   Safety first  ;) ::), just the thought of that drive shaft breaking loose and flailing around back there at 6000 rpm (breaking the pump the intake or ripping a hole in the hull) was enough for me to say I wont run it without a drive shaft hoop and a strong flex plate cover.  You never know what could happen, and I really don't want to have to send divers after my boat  :o.

 I scrounged up some material for the transom plates and got them cut out tonight.  I made patterns out of masonite first (same thickness) than just transferred the shape to the aluminum and cut it with my new jigsaw  ;D, (the old one died a sad and smelly death trimming the motor plates ;) ).  Still have a little more trimming to do but there close.

I like the alt placement, I am just wondering how well they hold up to being very wet.  I get waves over the back regularly when the wakeboard boats go by, and the water can get pretty deep back there when you "accidentally" take off with the place divertor pointed up ???

 A little more progress   ;D .

 The pump brace / drive shaft hoop is mounted (what a bit## !!!), but it fits perfect.   Now I can tension the alt belt without pulling the pump to one side  :o :o .

 Brackets for the batt and the diverter handle are done and mounted.  Excuse the mess, it was late  :-[
 [attachimg=3]
 We also made the mounts for the ride plate adjusters today. So that's all ready to go together, I just need to get some bolts for it (pics to come).  Only things left are to mount the seats , finish the ride plate, and cut the dash for the steering / gauges.  Than pull it back apart,finish the floors and put it all back together again  :banghead: :banghead: .   Its getting there  ;D ;D

She turned out real nice. Like I said before, I am glad you saved her from my brother-in-law's driveway. It was bound to sit there forever waiting for him to put it together.

Great job, now lets see some running shots! And for heaven's sakes, don't sell her! She'll treat you right on the water.

Many, many good times in that ride for years and years, now it's your turn.  ;D

Thanks Brian and everyone else,   but its not ready yet.   Started taking it back apart last week.  to finish the floors and polish all the aluminum  :banghead:. And theres still a couple things to figure out / make.

 Sell her   :o :o .  Never  (I'm not 2sav) ;D.  I was hoping to have it back together for the November NJBA race in Bakersfield, but now I think that race is canceled.  :-\  .   Would have been a good time/place to do some testing on it (safer than the lake, and lots of help around if I need it  ;)) .

Progress, (finally) the floors are DONE !!!  Not perfect but it will have to do for now, I have less than 4 weeks before the Tom Papp memorial event and I really want to take this thing.   I really need to get it in the water by the 1st to do a leak test and hopefully set the water to the headers etc, etc.  So unless the "jolly fat man" is bringing me fuel lines, Christmas is canceled  >:D .

A Lot of progress today,  Billy / Ironman made a flex plate cover, a loader and a cool fuel distribution block for me.  Now I have a new stack of parts to polish  :banghead: .  The good news is the motor is back in, the bad news is I have less than 2 weeks to get it done.  Still need to do the wiring, plumbing (fuel and water), and rebuild the carbs, plus a couple other things I cant think of right now (to tired).

 (https://forum.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FPICT0058-1.jpg&hash=21b12c2bd4f26ec294b1bd34828299c85e78d690)

 BTW, I don't like the new color of the motor, but it matches the dist cover and the seats.

Ok you need to get this thing wet and let me know what I need to do/not do with mine.  I finally got it back to Iowa and can't wait to get underway on the rebuild.  But, I was hoping you'd already have figured out what i shouldn't do that you might have done.  Other than polish the tunnel ram.  That looks killer but I don't like pretty enough to put all that extra work into it.  Your's is looking good though.  Maybe sometime in the year 2020 or so when mine is done we can run them both together.

The hull is solid with no visible delam.  The pump turns free but I'm thinking it will get a setback and a whirlaway.  The boat needs the rubrail seam capped and the floors redone.  So I'll probalby fill the dash holes and start with a blank slate.  The boat will probably be painted back yellow as that is the main color I see under the red paint.  As I was driving back with Art's old Bissi in tow also the paint and name came to me based on the underlieing yellow.  Art looked the boat over and he said the design and layup should work to turn circles safely (well as safe as any racing boat) although he said performance was dependent on setup (intake angles and placement) and HP (isn't it always).  I guess when it all goes back together we'll see what the mighty mopar can lay down.  In any case it is a good start and should make a fun toy.

   ::) Been there done that (go back a few pages  :banghead:) .  Glad your happy with your new toy. It will be cool to compare some angles (intake/amount of rocker) between the two.

 Now back to my junk, here's the new flex plate cover Billy / Ironman made for me. I also picked up a loader, a fuel distribution block, and a bracket to move my throttle away from the stringer from him. And I have a set of used headers coming from Tom (JBP) , I'm going to save the twistys for something else (I just don't like the way they look on this boat).  I have to admit, without Billy / Ironman and Tom (JBP) this thing would never have gotten this far, as well as everyone on here keeping me motivated.
[attachimg=1]

 Now for the bad news, I'm done for a while. I'm not going to make the Tom Papp event and this thing is getting out of hand (or I am). I was looking at it tonight and started thinking how the T ram needs nice new Allen head bolts and it needs to be repolished  :screwy: :screwy:.  I realized I'm getting more and more picky/anal about this thing every day.  If you look at the pic, I even painted the bolts and spacers on the cover and motor plate  ::).  Then I noticed the black ones on the valve covers, well, that will never do  ::) :screwy: .   I just need to throw the cover on it and walk away for a bit.  Maybe I'll go build some seat frames for the Daytona  :-\ .

Well I got back to work on it again.

 Water lines = done
 Fuel pump / reg = done
 Fuel lines = done
 Throttle pedal mounted = done
 Used headers ( out of the infamous Jet Boat Performance rafters ) = almost done, there cleaning up better than I thought they would Tom.  ;D

 I got rid of the Tstat housing looking thing (ugly) and made a flat plate. also moved one of the dump lines to the drivers side of the motor (looks better / more even).  Made a bracket to mount the fuel press reg (driver side of T/ram). Fuel lines go back from the reg and through the center of the T/ram into the dist block Billy/Ironman made me.

 Fuel pump. I cant believe it bolted up there and the brackets holes lined up perfect with two of the bolts for the transom plates ( It was all planned that way of course  ::))  ;D
 (https://forum.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FPICT0008-1-4.jpg&hash=26dc335142cf6bfd6b3846847ff3e2e79104e358)

 Now just wiring and rebuild the carbs. I'm NOT looking forward to doing the carbs, I hate them and they hate me !!  Every time I touch carbs they dribble fuel from somewhere when I'm done.  :banghead: :banghead:

 All the wiring is done, only the carbs and some misc left to do.  ;D ;D

 But I have a question, I wired my kill switch to kill the ignition. And after I was done I thought about the fuel pump (separate switch).  Should the kill switch shut off the fuel pump too??

 Kill switch
(https://forum.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FPICT0057-1-2.jpg&hash=0b1f9eef8d017cdc5a637cb30048479102bd264f)

 Batt disconnect switch

 Switches, 1 = ign, 2 = fuel pump, 3 = bilge pump, starter button.
(https://forum.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FPICT0055-1.jpg&hash=e835f1759ad6eb8488bb033a3308dd07739d4fbe)

 Dash, looks empty with no switches or ign switch.  ;D

My fuel pump is wired to a relay off of the ignition and a separate switch that cuts power to the power pole of the relay, no way to forget (wife and friends sometimes drive the boat), seems to work really well, the last three boats I did had it like this.

Lookin good proppy, I can almost hear it run...

 The dash is aluminum, I had to replace the wood behind the dash (it was cut to be a center steer boat), so, I needed to cover up the body work and didn't want to try to match the paint.  ;)

 The tach housing came from Tom at Jet Boat Performance ( http://www.jetboatperformance.com/index.php?p=main ). There still available new (as well as smaller ones for the other gauges) and not to expensive.  ;D

 You see, the other day I was tightining down the carbs and heard an verry bad sound, a loud pop.  I broke the F...ing baseplate on my older carb  :banghead: :banghead: :mad: :mad: .   I was telling him (Mark) about what I did Sunday and he said "come on over I have a big box of parts carbs, we can find something that should work".  I got over there and he had a complete carb sitting on the bench waiting for me  :o :o .  I just finished swaping the baseplates and the carb is good as new now  ;D ;D

Thank You Mark !!!

 I just finished mounting the carbs and made the linkage.

 Sorry guys I cant do video.   :(

 Tony,(oops, I mean HOLLYWOOD  ;D )  I don't care what anybody says this thing never had a fin  :screwy:.  Trust me, if there ever was one there I would of found signs of it while sanding the floor.  The red one that sold on PB a while back didn't have a fin either.

SnoC653, Nice to see you back here.  I was thinking to set the rideplate at 2deg up and the outer plates a couple deg down to start, and go from there.  :-\  It should be a safe place to start, I think.

 Here's the proof, It made it out of the garage tonight  ;D ;D !!!  And yea, I still need to take over to Ironmans shop to fix the fenders.  ::)  But, it holds fuel.  ;D

 (https://forum.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FPICT0006-1-5.jpg&hash=7c454172c8cb05377027cb5776d36c66d5fc6523)

 I came home, put it back in the garage, closed the door and turned on the fuel pump, no fuel.  :sly:  The stupid pump wouldn't prime.  I blew into one of the tanks until the pump got fuel and then it started to work, turned it on and off a few times and it worked fine after that. I might need to move the pump, we'll see  :-\ .  I have few small fuel dribbles to fix around the carbs and the fuel pressure wont adjust below 10psi.  I'm going to swipe the regulator out of the Daytona and try that one.

 But, THE BEAST RUNS  !!!!!  It coughed one minor ball of fire out of a carb then fired right up  ;D ;D  And I have to say this,  FU## single carb tunnel rams !!!!  Even untuned this thing sounds sooooooo much better than before, and the throttle response is 1000% better. Looks like I'm going to have to wait till Sunday to do the carb tunning. Its still to dark when I get home from work. And I need to get it outside so I can run some water through it, not to mention this thing is realy f###### loud in a closed garage.   ;D

Proppy , set your plates at 0*.
You want the boat to think it's longer than it really is so it'll get on plane really easy.
I think the plates will be fighting each other if they are too far off from each other.
The plates on my hallett were up 1* or so and it came out of the hole really nice and level.

Otherwise Badass !

I think the 1/8" down helps hold a little air under the edges and keeps the boat up on the spoon more.  That is why I really want to see yours running so I can learn a little more before I start adjusting the way mine is put together.  Was the pump in yours set back when you got it?  I can't recall and it's too late to scroll back through your build tonight.  I know my boat doesn't appear to have ever had a turn fin either.  It will be interesting to see how well yours turns without one so I'll know if i want to start out with the hassel of adding it.  I just can't wait till the day mine rolls out and fires up.  I just think your boat has those classic lines and looks nice sitting there ready to go.  I'm just a little jealous but also excited to see yours out there and ready to run.
Title: Re: Eliminator Sprint
Post by: propless on February 25, 2009, 10:09:03 PM
 That would make sence SnoC653.  I'm not sure if mine will be much help, I think I'll have alot of detunning to do.  Brian was running at least 1000 hp more than me.  The pump was set back a long time ago (by Tom Papp). I'm not sure where stock is in these hulls but mine is all the way back against the transom but not through it.  I'm not sure if this would be a good thing for running in circles with this hull or not, but it obviously worked as a drag boat.

 If all goes well with the carbs Sumday am. I'll try to take it to the water in the afternoon.  I hope Billy (Ironman) can get his boat running Saterday so I can have a safty / tow boat and someone to get some shots of it underway so I can see what its doing.  If not I'll go over there Sunday and lend a hand on his boat so we can make it next week.

  First off it wouldn't start  :banghead: , no fuel pressure.  Had to blow into one of the tanks to prime the pump again.  I think I know what I did wrong there.  I put filters between the tanks and the T , because I wasn't sure how clean the tanks were.  And I think the electric pump doesn't like the filters there.  I was thinking that coming down the ramp (forward) the pickups in the tanks uncovered (less than half full) and then the pump wouldn't prime again without some help.  Easy fix, move the filters.

  Got it fired up, idled around to the other side of the dock and steele211 asks, where are your water dumps.  No water is coming out of the transom.  Forgot to turn on the water from the pump  ::).  Easy fix, open the valve  :banghead: .   Forgot to mention after I opened the valve I fired it back up while he held me at the dock (diverter all the way down and in reverse  ::) ) and I kinda sprayed him (sorry bro  ;D ).  About now I'm starting to feel like an idiot newbie.

 We head out, get to the end of the "no wake" zone, and I roll into it.  Wooohooo it moves  ;D ;D. It jumps right up on the water, cool.   Running along about 2500rpm and its porpoising a bit with the diverter all the way down  :sly: . My great idea,   go faster  :banghead:,  this crazy boat trys to hop all the way out of the water at about 35 mph, that was a bad plan. Back to the dock.
 I hang off the side of the dock and drop the outer plates 1 1/2 turnes on the turnbuckles.  Get ready to head back out and my "boat bitch" asks if I can add some kind of bull riding strap under the seat for the next trip  >:( .  Back out in open water and I hit it again.  This boat leaves way harder than the old boat, pops right up on the water and flattens out (a bit), This thing really likes to fly the bow !!  Diverter about half way and all is OK.  My first thought, Hammer it !!!  :o  5100 rpm  >:( and 62mph  >:(  running like crap. These carbs need help, still wont open the secondaries.  It feels like its dragging a sea anchor when you lift. And still rides bow high,  Even with the plates wayyyyy down and at only 62 mph you could feel the hull was really trying to air out.  Its going to take some work, but I think it will be OK, its just going to take lots of testing.

 Now for the bad news, we pulled it out of the water and were shooting the shit and telling lies about haw fast we were and I noticed something bad. I was looking at the exhaust side of the heads (by the headers) and could see an even discoloration of the new paint above the ports (normal) except for #4, no discoloration, the paint looked fresh.  :sly:  Checked the oil.............. milkshake  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:. I was thinking it was an intake gasket (again) from the last run in the old boat.  Strange thing is I pulled the plugs when I got home and it looks normal.  I was expecting it to look clean from water.  I'm going to do some checking this week and see whats going on.

The fun continues  :sly:

i like the way it sits in the water....my hallet is identical to this boat and i have tried to imagine what it would look like when floating.

now im kinda excited to start workin on the hallet....finally  ;D

 I was really surprised how high it sits, you can see in the pics that almost 1/3 of the pump is above water.  And the one time it died coming into the no wake zone, no water came over the transom.  ;D

I hope everything is good with the engine.  I was wondering if that spoon shape would make it want to pourpois with out some extra down on the plates or extra speed to get it up on the hump.  I'm definately going to do adjustable plates on mine.  I think once it is up and running on the spoon it won't need the down in those plates.  Do you think the setback contributes to the nose high attitude?  Like it is riding behind the peak of the spoon and you need to get it to push up on top of that peak before it will sit level?
Title: Re: Eliminator Sprint
Post by: propless on March 02, 2009, 09:58:24 PM
  SnoC653, I must have been asleep when I set the plates (about 1 am) the night before the run. I just crawled out from under there and as of now (after cranking them down at the lake) the outer plates are 2 deg down, the ride plate is at the same angle as the shoe (tapered) 2deg up (compared to the hull directly next to the back of the intake.  I might of had them at 0 or higher for the first run  :-\ .  I'm also thinking the tapered shoe is way to aggressive for my use.

 As far as the set back, I know Tom (JBP) had some luck with his rocker project boat buy shortening up the pump (went from a droop to a straight snoot and then to a standard set up and it got better each time, if I remember right  :-\ ) .

Like it is riding behind the peak of the spoon and you need to get it to push up on top of that peak before it will sit level?
I had to think about that for a while.  But, that's a very interesting way to think about it !!!  That would explain why Brian had the motor set so far forward.  And with all the weight I added to to the back (fuel tanks and motor farther back) it might need some transom lift.  It did seem to like the diverter set slightly down.

Proppy, I got nuthin but encouragement. That is a beautiful boat.   FYI, I've been told that an electric fuel pump should be mounted below the fuel level of the tanks if at all possible.  In fact, my new Holley is mounted to the pump plate that Billy cut and has the pump end well below the bottom of the tanks so they tanks "siphon" and don't lose the prime.  I'll try to snap some pics of my project if it would help....  Good luck.........john

 Thanks John,  I was thinking about moving mine down on the pump brace too.  If it has any issues priming after moving the filters, that's where its going.  The strange thing is my old boat had its pump mounted on the back of the terminal strip on top of the bell housing and never had a problem.  Maybe its an issue with the Holley pumps, the old boat used a Carter pump.

Electric pumps in general are designed to push fuel and work best if they don't have to pull fuel.

Its not making enough power and changes need to be made.   >:D

That's what I'm talking about!

Boat looks great!

My question ... did you leave the motor where I had it? I had to move it that far forward due to the blown alcohol dealio to keep the nose down (weight forward). If you left it there, you might be fighting gravity (boat starts to get on plane behind the rocker and then is too heavy due to motor placement and drops back down? then the porpousing starts?)

I still would like to help if you can ever make a trip down. You should plan a trip to lower river this summer!

Again, looks great! You have a blast with it.

Sorry guys, didn't see your replies until now.

 Brian, the motor is about 6 or so inches back from where you had it. Your right though, I might need to slide it back a bit more with my (modest) power.  Its going back together now and I'm going to try some of your other suggestions before moving the motor (it looks to good where it is  ::) ).  I think I'm going to have some new decals made for it and name this thing  "Balancing Act" , or "teeter totter"  ::).

 Tom, (as you already know) I got the impellers, and other parts.  Thanks for the "hook up".

 Its on its way back together,
 Motor is back together and in the boat again.  The water issue was leaky intake gaskets (again) probably from the old boat.  And a pin sized hole in the wall of the #4 exhaust port (injecting water into the port), Some idiot got a bit to excited porting the heads (me  :-[) but all is well now.
[attachthumb=1]

 I added a water bypass valve (just in case) this time.
[attachthumb=2]

 I also picked up a new impeller and a split bowl (with some secret work done  >:D).  Now I can try some of Busbys set up suggestions on this little bit## and see if I can make it happy again.  Happy happy joy joy, now I get to polish another bowl  :banghead: .

 Well boys, Its all back together now.  Except for the loader (ironman is coming over to help me get it mounted).  It will be back on the water next Sunday for some carb tunning and some top speed runs .  Big thanks to Tom and Josh (JBP) for walking me through the pump work, hopefully I did it right.  As well as Busby, GTjets, and SnoC653 for attempting to explain how this crazy hull should work, and hopefull what it wanted.

Keep yor fingers crossed for me guys, its all or nothing time.  I'm bringing the plates up and I'm going to let this thing set back and fly this time.  >:D

 Changes include, one very worked JG bowl, a Berk droop (also worked to match the bowl), a new A impeller, a shouldered wear ring, 750 vac sec carbs replaced with a set of 660s, and the heads were repaired.  Also had to replace the for/rev and diverter cables (to short), and add a steering extention.  I also drilled and tapped the suction housing for some temperary pressure gauges.  So I can see whats going on in there this time.

 Well I'm officially calling it DONE !  The trailer has fenders (that wont fly off).  And I finally got some time to finish up a few things on it.  I'm sure it will still need more work on the setup, but I'm done building.  I took it out to Moms house today, ran some water through it and did some tuning on the carbs. It was late afternoon before I was done.  So, it will be next weekend before it gets wet again.  I'll post some pics when it gets wet.  I just hope this thing works this time.  :-\

We're werkin out the details of who's doing what on it. Then we're just gonna compromise and do it my way, lol. Should be back over at my buds next week to start the grinding/recapping, glassing in where the Jacuzzi intake and transom adaptor were. Then paint before I get it back and cut it up for the Berk setup. I'm hoping it goes pretty quick. Still undecided on powerplants.  Ray,  The old corkscrew style I had in the Lancer did a good job quieting it down, but they absolutely killed the power.  These new ones from Tom don't do much as far as quieting it down (I ordered the shortest ones he had), so hopefully they wont cost much power.

 Just a side note,  These short headers look really cool (to me), but be warned people.  They spit nasty dirty water all over the transom if you run them wet.  :banghead:

NAw, I'm an open header kinda guy. My acute hearing long gone from hot rodding that way and too much gunfire without protection, music, etc. I tried the baffles only because of Saguaro lake here I was TOLD was more strict than regulations were. WRONGO!, but that's another matter. Anyway, put them in, then took them right back out (They're still in the truck I think) . Told Nordie they made shit bit o difference to me, only robbed RPM's.

Nordie says I'm just deaf (I don't think that's the case, but close) and a liar because the open headers I sent him, apparently, made his Mohawk stand up like morning wood I guess! lol

Woulda loved to have seen that, lol. (Talk about a Kodak moment!)

Jeff Per your PM , yes as an objective observers Josh and I (as you know ) have been watching this for some time , The good news I honestly belive this can be corrected and make this a "palatable" Lake boat Completely under stand the frustration and Heart ache This much is true This can be corrected ! Tom

 FWIW there were clearly some inconsistacies in the representation of this IMO , and thats a standard Berk 4* intake not a low profile

I say Lets not be defeated by this lets fix it ! Set the jet back drop the intake and move the motor back as far as allowed  a couple days work You pull the motor and the Jet , let Josh set the intake ,!

 Just so everybody knows and you dont think Toms previous post was off the wall.  After installing the droop and looking at things for awhile, there seems to be some issues with this thing (the droop made it more noticeable).  At this point I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it.  I still plan to take it out Sunday, and see what it does.  As far as what the problem is, it has to do with the amount of rocker this hull has and the fact that it has a set back pump.  Moving the pump back put the intake farther back on the rocker and gave it some issues to deal with.  As it is now the hull wants to set all the way back on the rideplate and really fly.  This may have worked in the past with the massive power it had and as an all out drag boat, but it never had to cruise to the hang out spot.  Busby and the late Tom Papp had this thing set up to be an all or nothing boat.  They did what needed to be done to get it run as fast as it did, multiple passes over 121mph.  Unfortunately I dont have that kind of power and I do need it to behave in at least a semi reasonable manner for the trip from the ramp to the hang out spot (and back) without having to tow it around and just make passes with it.

 Bottom line is, not to many people would buy an old blown alcohol drag car and try to turn it into a daily driver.  But thats exactly what I'm doing with this thing.  :screwy:

 Now if I had that motor this thing would work.   :(

 But I still have a few secret ideas up my sleeve that might help tame this thing.  If all else fails I saved a spot in front of the batt that's just the right size for a nitrous bottle.  >:D

 Just a reminder for those that don't remember where this boat came from, hears a crappy old pic from when Busby owned it.

 Still fighting with it John, Its been on the water every weekend and its making small improvements here and there.  I'm not giving up on it, I will make this thing work somehow !!  Here's a pic someone from over on PB took from Mendota last weekend.  Couldn't really get any feedback from the set up changes because it decided to run like crap  :banghead: .   As soon as I get it figured out I'll let you know what it wanted, might be helpfull info for the Sanger.

 You know I wont give up Steve, I'm way to stubborn to let the boat win !!!!

 Skip,  Its just east of Mendota on 180. Not really sure where the water comes from, but I really liked the place.  No rollbar boats/wake barges, they would be stuck between the bridges where the ramp is (very small area, and low bridges  ;D),  I didn't get to explore the place but I was told it goes on for a long way.

Damn, that looks nice!!!!!   Good luck with the challenge and I'm certain you'll figg'r it out.  We have lots of time as my sons regular gig has all but dried up so he's working at a bike custom shop and the money is not the same.

I'm planning on getting my pig wet this weekend and hope to have some pics as well.  Thanks again and please keep us posted on your efforts (good n bad) to tame the wild thang....  We're right behind you   ;D

Oops, what I should have said was, its a terrible place to take a boat and we all decided to NEVER go back !!  Its full of mosquitoes and man eating fish.  Not to mention the water kinda burns your skin and dissolves fiberglass.  :o

Well boys, I found my HP issue.

 After 8 yrs of faithfull service the Mighty BBF is hurt.  :'( :'(   It was down to 4100rpm yesterday and sounded bad doing it.  I pulled the valve covers tonight and found a handful of rockers with lots and lots of "clearance".  Looks like it ate the cam.

 Now I'm boatless again., in the middle of summer, AGAIN !!!!  SON OF A ##### !!!!!!!  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

 I'm not sure what the plan will be yet.  I need to talk to my motor guy, but I do know I need more power.   Might go for a BIG stroker, or something bottle fed, or both !!  >:D

 Anybody have a blower manifold for a 460 sitting around ?   >:D ;D

Not yet, But I'm sure I will end up with one eventually (Got one of nearly everything else methinks). I'll keep an eye out fer ya!

I'm told that once you get a good "Blower", you'll never be the same tho......................Lord I hope it wasn't Beerjet that told me that...................................

Edit: FWIW, also have a cam and lifter set you can have, only 20 minutes run time, from the original tossed rod engine from the Moo. Looks fine, but have no idea what make or grind it is, but it's yours to try Jeff if you need it. (Might get you in the water quick!, was supposed to be a hot lil number according to the PO) I'll try and get pics tomorrow or Wednesday of it.

 I really appreciate the offers guys !!!   But, there's something really wrong with it this time. I really don't understand what the problem is, but I cranked it over to check compression a few days later (5 cylinders at 170, 2 at 165, 1 at just under 165) not bad for an 8 year old motor.  And all of a sudden after checking the first cylinder, all the rockers where tight again and everything looked normal   :sly:.  I know for sure the lifters werent collapsed like that when it was running (would have been really noisy) so it had to do it after it was shut down.   Bad thing is the oil was full of powdered metal, and it was all the way up in the heads (went through the motor).  I didn't see it up there at first, but when I was cleaning things up there was a layer of it under the oil in all the little recesses in the heads.   :'(   Its OK, Ive got a floaty chair for the pool where I can make vroom vroom noises, and the boat wanted more power anyway, and it made it home !!!!   Cant swing a new motor build for it right now so it has to wait for winter.  This is going to an expensive winter.  ;)

The good news is this gives me more time to be on here and provide 2sav with as much "motivation" as needed until he gets that boat of his wet !!!!  >:D >:D

 Well I finally tore into the motor and found a dead cam. One intake valve had a total of 1/4" of valve lift. There were a few others that didnt look to good either.  New parts are on there way (just a basic little cam, almost stock  ::)) and it should be back together soon.  I took a look at a few rod/main bearings while its apart and everything looks great in there.  I guess I got lucky, all the missing metal from the cam and lifters is in the bottom of the pan.   I really cant believe how much abuse this poor old motor has taken and it still always gets me back to the ramp  ;D.

 Fear not Ford fans,  The MIGHTY BBF will be back in action soon, breathing fire and kicking Cheby azz all over the waters of the central valley !!!!  >:D

Just swap out the motor for something that will always get you back to the ramp and enjoy your day on the water...a Paddle!

And you thought I was going to say a BBC  ;)

Glad to hear that it wasnt a major overhaul that was needed.

Dang, I'm late to a thread again.

Speaking of shooting, I think the hack who put in that carpet should be shot.  I hate that kind of crap.

That black gooey stuff is called cutback and probably a vinyl adhesive.  It's a bitch.  Using solvents is NOT a good idea.  I've used dry ice before (scrapes up better when frozen) but in the confines of a boat this is not a good idea.  Scraping is better than sanding.  Still a hard job no matter which way you go.  I'd cover it up it it weren't for the wood floor.
