Title: Mach 1
Post by: hotrod56cars on August 08, 2007, 08:18:55 AM
It's a 1978 Pioneer 19' Mach 1 Tunnel Hull, former drag boat. Here's some pics.   ;D

The white really needs a re-paint. The line where the rub rail would be got whacked by a dock. It got professionaly repaired and now it's ready for some sanding and some paint. The white also has runs in it almost down it's entire side. The red doesn't have one chip in it but it isn't a show quality paint job either. I'm fine with the red.
[attachimg=#]

Seats definately need re-upholstory.
[attachimg=#]

Unknown model (at this time) Dominator pump, Berkeley droop, late model Place Diverter with hydraulic controls, shoe, ride plate, high speed loader grate, unknown impellor (at this time).
[attachimg=#]

New gauges, boat got 14 hours since a total rebuild.
[attachimg=#]

Real nice shiney chrome rail kit, anodized front plate. It also came with a crank mounted altenator, Bassett shorty headers (not shiney anymore but very solid), a 454 punched out to a 468, cast crank, cast rods, 1 disintegrated rod, 1 damaged piston, 1 disintegrated piston, a 4 piece roller camshaft (not supposed to be in 4 pieces), Comp Cams roller rockers, mid-70's Chevrolet truck oval port open chamber large combustion chamer big valve ported and polished heads, full race single carb intake, Holley DP of unknown size needing a rebuild, all the nuts and bolts, valves and gadgets etc...
[attachimg=#]

A true tunnel hull, vs. a fake tunnel hull? Damn I'm mentaly tired...  :P

So your saying it is a Berkley pump???????? well with all my years of building boats and growing up racing them I have never seen a Berkley pump look like that.. that is defiantly a dominator pump with a Berkley transom adapter.

what kind of pump is this??? (https://forum.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.justjetboats.com%2Fpics%2Fswtdt.JPG&hash=4af9ae154dc8220c4e1971d7eed907c17d40928b)

look at the two closely and see if you can tell whats different..

its sure is nice to talk shit on someone and not know what your talking about .......

I'm saying I don't care what kind of pump it is. I haven't looked at it yet. The pump in the above picture is a Berkeley, has a American Turbine droop snoot on it, with an American Turbine nozzle. Is this a test?

its sure is nice to talk shit on someone and not know what your talking about .......

I don't know who you are but you're probably either the guy the looked at it or that guy's friend. Why don't you tell me who you are so I know who I'm clowning next.  ;)

Every single person that has seen this boat in person and that has read that post on the other site that "describes" this boat has LOL due to the inaccuracy of that other post. It's a done deal so I don't know why we're still carrying on about this...

Fourq,

Dont mind him...he owns an outboard  ;D

The only difference i see (thats showing on the black pump) is the oil/grease fittings arent there on the brown pump. Is there something else I am missing? I am not familiar with the dominator pumps.

btw, the ass end of the boat you posted is niiiiiiice.  8)

BTW - welcome to the site!

Brad you are correct it just irritates me when people talk shit about something they don't know. it is a dominator pump as it has no grease or oil passage in the bowl. A Dominator is either water lubricated or has a grease Zerk in the shaft end of the bowl. The ass in the pic is one of my old Southwind tunnels  ;D she was a bute.

ok you want to be an ASS thats fine with me.. I am neather of the 2 you refered to I am Fut's brother.  I dont care about how clean it is or isnt the descripsion was passed on by someone else over the phone.. big deal .. you got it and your happy with it thats all that matters right. my post wasnt about you or your boat but if you want to make it that way fine... I was just corecting the fact that you all keep saying its a berkley and its not.  it is very obvious from the pic as you can see with the one I posted. My family has built a few of the worlds fastest jet boats my brother and I have grown up doing this and seen a lot and learned alot and we know the diffrance between a berkley and a dominator. you want to keep flaming me for my post go ahead. lets settle it on the lake then.. finish your tunnel and bring it out the the parker 300 lets run in circles..  ;D

ohh ya I will let you pick from my boats what one you want me to run.

WTF?  ??? An ass I am then.  ;D  I don't know any of you personaly. That's what is supposed to matter anyway, buyer and seller are both happy.  ;)  " I was just corecting the fact that you all keep saying its a berkley and its not." Uhmmm where in the flock do I keep saying it's a Berkeley, the only way that's possible is if you keep reading the same two sentences over and over and over. It's spelled Berkeley not Berkley, Mr. doing this my whole life get the flock off my back and move on. Settle this on a lake? I'd rather just drop it and if that don't work then I'd settle it in the street. WTF? I don't even know what "flaming you" means  :-\  wording actually makes me a little nervous... Why in the flock would I run a tunnel in circles? I thought that was a big no no?  ???

Dude, relax, have a beer, thanks for joining the site, we need more people like you that have been doing this sh!t for a long time.  ;)  :)

BTW, this thread is going south quick so let's point it straight up north, I took the time and finaly looked at the flockin pump, it's a Dominator. OK? OK. Great.

lots of tunnel boats turn great. most of the time its just limited to how big your balls are as to how fast you want to turn it. there was a few Eliminator Daytonas that ran the comp jet class many years ago and they did quite well

This is what I'm talking about, seriously good information! I read somewhere that tunnels tend to flip or roll over in a turn... I personally have no clue as I've never even sat in a tunnel... how fast can a tunnel jet do a u-turn? 5 mph? 25mph? 45 mph?  ???   ???   ???

you can turn them at a decent speed. how fast depends on your setup I don't want to tell you at 45 -60 and have you try it and get killed. but it can be done. and as far as the weedwackers ya they can turn but not like a K  ;D...

Man I would love to pick your brain about our hulls. I read you did a ton of work to the bottom of your hull but I don't know what you did. You have one hell of a ride going on there   :o   :o   :o  I noticed that box that's on the back of the hull, the box that sets the pump further back, is shorter on yours than on mine. Your's is newer and there must be a reason why they changed it.   ???

I believe some people whack them down so the pop off valve clears and they dont have to remove the intake . After all with a tunnel like these and the southwinds the intake is already pretty far back . I dont know if thats what he did though .

Was for sale, changed my mind.

My initial goal was to hit 150 MPH then walk away, I tried but couldn't. The boat felt so good at over 150 MPH that I couldn't walk away without taking it to the limit.

We're playing with Plesh's head when we type like that   >:D

Man I would love to pick your brain about our hulls. I read you did a ton of work to the bottom of your hull but I don't know what you did. You have one hell of a ride going on there   :o   :o   :o  I noticed that box that's on the back of the hull, the box that sets the pump further back, is shorter on yours than on mine. Your's is newer and there must be a reason why they changed it.   ???

My boat was initially like yours, then the back box was whacked off, the outer runners were dropped and the keel was dropped.

Sound like you effectively made the tunnels deeper, did you wack off the back box for a pop-off valve or a different reason? Any idea how much HP is required (roughly?) to get into the triple digits?  ???

That boat looks great !!!

This picture is what was in the Mach 1 when I bought it, the owner said it made approx 650 HP and would do over 90 MPH.
However, I bought it less engine, interior and gauges so I can't validate his statement.

Thanks  FORKEDUP, bkplesh, hotrod56cars, beerjet for the compliments. I was planning to get a shake down run this weekend but that hasn't been the case, maybe next weekend.

The overall plan is to get a shake down run logged, make sure everyting works as expected, then turn it loose Labor Day weekend, one year to the day of the last run. I will know whether or not I will be able to turn the engine up then, I am hoping that I will need to.

It is going to be very hard to narrow it down, the conditions at the lake change frequently throughout the day, mostly the wind.  I live 20 minutes from the lake, so whenever it looks good, I will go. I will have to wait it out, could be Wednesday, Thursday or even Friday.

Hey BAE,

Just thought I'd say Hi!!  I remember you from the FZ1 site. You sold Todd that really clean Thunder Ace. I Sold the FZ and bought a boat a few months ago and found this site. The CyberWorld is getting smaller. That is a beautiful boat and I wish I could be there when You pull the trigger on that thing.
You might remember me as "On the Drums".

Good Luck,

I do remember you from the FZ1 website, that is cool. Todd is a great dude and got a really nice T-Ace. Sometimes I think that I should have kept it, oh well.

Sounds like you sold your FZ1 for a great looking boat, tell me some of the details of your boat. Maybe we could hook up sometime at a lake somewhere beween No Cal and So Cal.

I lke simplicity, hence the FZ1..... so i found this boat..... 1978 Ranger 20' open bow with a bimini top. It has a Ford 302 with a 2bbl and a volvo penta sterndrive. It's not gonna chase anyone off the lake but it's been pretty reliable. I'm planning a trip to Laughlin in early October (after the crowds are gone) and we're probably gonna launch at lake Mohave. A little too shallow on the river there for a prop. I think Todd may have sold the T-Ace....... he's moved on to the next big thing. I saw the T-Ace at the Rock Store last year... Beautiful bike!!

Didn't mean to Hi-Jack this thread.......

I got the hydraulic Place Diverter to work on the Mach 1 today. Here's a copied and paisted post on it (with a few edits).

I called Tom at Jet Boat Performance. We shared probably 8 phone calls between us, he'd tell me what to do, I'd do what he recomended, I'd call him back, he told me what to do next, etc... all of this free tech advice while Tom is trying to run a business was purely unexpected by me and way above and beyond Tom givng a fellow boater a hand. Long story short, we got it working!  Tom you are a really cool person, a great help to me, and I owe you more than just the first round!

Thanks Tom!

Honestly, I'm not sure what was wrong with it! LMFAO
A combination of problems actually.

First the thing was low on fluid. Filled it up with ATF fluid. They now sell ATF fluid that works for both Mercon and Dexron 3, amazing.

Tom told me to loosen the solenoid's (I think that's what he called them, 4 round devices in the pump) up a little bit which I did but it still didn't work. They were extremely tight and required me to use both hands to loosen 3 out of the 4. Tom said they should be one hand "snug" tight.

Next it made a whining sound but nothing moved, so I disconnected the lines at the slave, put the lines in a bucket and operated the Diverter's switch to see if it pumped fluid out of the lines. It immediately pumped fluid out of the lines for "down" but took it several seconds to pump fluid out for "up".

Next I used my hands and moved the Diverter up and down (with a towel wrapped around it is better than the way I did it) and I saw light pink fluid shooting out of the hydraulic ram. I worked the hell out of the diverter by manually moving it up and down to get all that water/ATF mixture out of it. I hooked the lines back up to it and refilled the pump with fluid.

Diverter moved up but wouldn't move down. So Tom had me loosen up those 4 solenoids again and just like majic the Diverter started working.

I know that doesn't "read" like 8 phone calls, honestly I didn't count the calls, but there had to be at least 6 calls and you have to understand that I didn't/don't have a clue as to what in the hell I'm doing.

I worked on the Mach 1 a little bit today. I hooked up water to it and found two small water leaks. The alternater isn't charging the battery. I fired up the engine and set the timing at 36 degree's total, shut the engine off, tried to re-start the engine and broke the starter's nose. I then replaced the starter and found the initial timing to be at 20 degree's when I set the total timing at 36 degree's. I brought down the initial timing to 10 degree's.

Eninge sounds OK but it's running rough and a friend said he saw some flames shooting out the exhaust. I'm thinking I've got a vacuum leak somewhere... I really have no clue... I'm out of patience so I'm going to get back on it tomorrow to see what I can flock up next.

I'd try a different distributor if possible.

It sounds like the distributor might be binding or doesn't have enough advance dialed into it.  If it took 20 degrees to get a total of 36 your only getting about 16 out of the distributor.  The distributor should have about 20 built in.

The distributor is an HEI with an aftermarket coil on it. The more I think about it, the more it sounds like a vacuum leak to me. It "idles" at 800 RPM and is really rough and lopey, maybe it's just the cam's profile that makes it that rough and lopey... but I think it should be able to idle lower than 800 RPM. Shouldn't it? If I lower the idle below 800 the engine dies.

What is a good starting point for a BBC on it's initial timing? If I can't get it to run good at idle it will run worse at higher RPM's I would think.
What kind of spray can I use to find my possible vacuum leak (i.e.: carb cleaner, WD-40, etc...) that won't stain my carb or my aluminum parts?
When I started it after getting it from the engine builder it ran smoother and had zero "lag" when the throttle was pushed, it seems like the more I run it, the worse it gets both on how smooth it runs and now it has a serious lag (allmost dies) whenever the throttle is pushed... something is self-destructing... besides myself self-destructing.   >:(

I was told to set my (Mild perfomance) 454 at 32-33 degrees and then continue increasing until it pinged or dropped off power.

With the Mallory dual point (no vacuum) to get 33 at 3000 rpm I set the initial at 13 with a dial back timing light.

So far thats as much as I've put to it.  It runs good off idle to 4500 max and will only pull the boat to the low 50's.  I think it has stock compression and a lot of years of service at 35mph with the previous owner.

Rod, I asume you checked all the basics, like water in the fuel.  About the charging, did that alt come with the boat? If not, Im not sure a standard alt will charge turning backwards?  ???

Thanks. It's at 10 degree's right now, not that it seems to make much of a difference.

I have not checked for water in the fuel, I don't know how to. Yep, it's the alternator that came with the boat. I'm pulling the alternator off this morning and taking it to a shop that can repair it on-site. I'm also thinking about swapping carbs with the carb that came with the boat.   ???

Long story short, it's the carb. I have the initial timng now at 18 initial, 36 total. More on the timing later.

Long story long, I broke in the cam with the engine after I built it, got water in the oil, had a engine builder rebuild it for me, got it back 2 1/2 months later, ran great, and within the next week of running it on the trailer runs like garbage. I pulled the front fuel bowl off of the carb and it's full of brown crap, looks like dirt.  The guy that built my engine is going to clean it out for me for less than half of what the carb builder wanted. I'm trying to make one last river trip before it's past the season...

The timing. When I broke the cam in I was trying to use my "bought new on eBay from private seller's" MSD Marine distributer, MSD 6AL, and Blaster 2 coil. The MSD box is bad/defective and puts out a constant rapid fire spark just by hooking up the +12, ground, and the tach wire. So I'm hoping that I can "settle" and use the HEI until I can figure out how to go about and how much it's going to cost to fix the MSD 6AL. Anyway, the HEI that's on it now has initial timing at 18, total timing at 36 degree's. From idle to about 2200 RPM it's at 18 degree's, from 2200 to 4000 is the curve and stays constant from 4000 on at 36 degree's. Seems like the HEI's curve is short and comes in late.

At least my first thought was right, it is running lean.   ;D

If your not getting full advance until nearly 4000 rpm I would suggest getting an assortment of advance springs and try to get full advance by 3000.  If I remember correctly You'll need to have someone with a distributor machine adjust the total mechanical advance.  18 initial is a little high and 18 mechanical is a little low.

Rod
If it ran fine at first, that brown crap came from one of your tanks! Go to a parts store or your garage and get one of those clear glass or clear plastic fuel filters, hook it up to the fuel line that fed the carb than run a piece of hose from the filter back into one of the tanks through the filler cap. Turn on the fuel pump and let it run while you watch the filter for anymore of that brown crap. Also lift the front of the trailer a few times to slosh the fuel around a little than leave it slightly high (like the boat was in the water) and let it sit for a while first, that should put any more crap at the tanks pickups.

If you find more of it, I would pull the tanks out and flush them out realy good !  Its better than being stuck in the middle of the lake in a low profile boat that wont run because the carb is half full of brown crap!! :o :o
  Been there, Done that!  :(

There's no way to explain it short version, so here it goes...

When I first used the carb, directly after it got rebuilt by a carb guy, I put it in my Rogers. I used it for 23 minutes in that boat. I hooked it up with used fuel line, used fuel filter, a new fuel pump, and a new fuel regulator. The sequence was: gas tanks, a "T", fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel regulator, carb. When BKPlesh was installing my fuel system in the Mach 1 (2 1/2 months later) he, and others, were giving me shit for putting the fuel filter after the fuel pump so he switched it and made it right. We used the same filter and lines. More than likely, the fuel filter was bad from it's used begining, also likely is there was crap stuck in the fuel pump since there was no fuel filter before it. Now, the sequence is: gas tanks, a "T", a new fuel filter (glass), fuel pump, fuel regulator, and carb. I'm going to waiste some gas and flush the crap out of what's in there. The old fuel filter was a semi-clear plastic one with what looks like paper inside, the paer probably deteriorated from sitting around dry several times after it got fuel to it several times, dried out again, etc... Whew...

It's a damn good thing I saved that 3 bucks on a new fuel filter because now all I have to do is rebuild the carb, again.   :P   :-[

I have to swap trailer tires, flush out the fuel lines, install the carb, install the alternater, run the mo fo on the trailer for about a half hour or so, change the PTO, install the driveshaft, and go get gas on the way to the lake. Hopefully the alternater will charge, but if it doesn't it's not going to stop me from going to El Cap tomorrow. I'll be later in the day vs. earlier. There's supposed to be two more boats going with me, both probably faster than mine.  ;D  Oh yea, I got to go pick up a borrowed GPS and pick up some numbers for the hull.  ;)

I spent most of today working on the trailer for the v-drive and never touched my boat.  :P

no but really Rod, it aint so bad. At least now you have a base line to go off of, get off your ass and start modifying shit. that's what hot boating is all about, get your motor running right, maybe change impeller's or camshafts to get the rpms up. well you get the idea. hell i towed that hondo all the way to the river and 5 min on the water and it was broke and back on the trailer for the weekend.

A fresh 427 BBC Chevrolet with 11:1 compression showing less than 200 HP on the impellor RPM chart   ???  , nah, there's something wrong there for sure.  ;)  I figure I should search from the inside out, do a compression check to make sure nothing's wrong on the inside, check the rocker arms to make sure they're all still adjusted properly/cam's not going flat, go to the carb, make sure a fuel line isn't falling apart on the inside filling the carb with crap (again), go to the distributer and check it for wear on the cap and rotor, check the wires and plugs, etc. etc. etc.

Marc! I know you (and others) wanted a ride yesterday to see how a tunnel jet acts on the water, trust me brother yesterday was not the day for that, with the self-moving Place Diverter, and all of the other problems! I could have drug you around on a sheet of plywood with my family's 75 HP outboard powered boat and you would have had a better ride.  :P

just some thoughts....

have you looked inside that pump? whats the impeller look like? what size is it?

without going back and reading a ton, i vaguely remember there being a bigger motor in it before....maybe the pump was set up for more horsepower and your motor isnt able to turn the water as well.  ???

also, you said it rode like shit? put a straight edge on the bottom....does it got hook? how about the ride plate...where is it set at?

just some suggestions of things to look at.

Title: Re: Mach 1
Post by: hotrod56cars on August 27, 2007, 09:10:02 AM
I briefly looked inside the pump just long enough to figure out it's got an aluminum impellor, the egde of the impellor isn't chewed up, it's not filled with rope, and that's about it. I just looked again, and it looks good enough to do 60 at least  :D  , it's got a loader grate (not hanging super low or high), lots of bumps, holes, and dips in the intake area (poor fitting loader, screw heads with no filler, etc...).

It had a 454 with about 9:1 compression, same exact intake, same exact valve sizes, 30 more cfm on the carb, same exact distributer, it now has a 427 with 11:1 compression, etc... the current engine should be about 40 more HP, at least. The previous owner claimed a mph of 72 with his engine and I believe him to be an honest person.

I'm reasonably sure it was riding like crap due to the self-adjusting  ???  hydraulic Place Diverter, but yea, I should check it for a hook as well. OK, I just looked the bottom, I'm guessing it's supposed to be flat for the last ? 10 or so feet, there is a hook in there and I'd say it's less than 1/4" (without breaking out the tools). The ride plate does have an angle to it, very little, again without breaking out the tools... I'm guessing it's about 3 or 4 degree's from the bottom of the hull.  ???

I'm sticking with engine problems/tuning until I can't research the engine anymore... then I'll move on to the boat part of it.
Title: Re: Mach 1
Post by: hotrod56cars on August 27, 2007, 09:33:25 AM
I have no idea what I'm talking about.  ;)

If the boat had a severe hook in it, my mph would be low, but my RPM's would be higher than 3900 I think.

If the impellor was all chewed up, wouldn't that also make my mph low and my RPM's higher than what they are?

I'm quitting on the Mach 1 for a few days, I'm at least a week behind on my finances and I really need to get on the finances before they become a real big problem ...

The question about hook really had nothing to do with engine performance....it was reguarding your comment about how crappy it rode....but i guess you can figure it was maybe the self adjusting place diverter.....please go into more detail about what happened with this......was it slippping like the hydrolics werent holding pressure? or it had a mind of its own like there was an electrical problem.

i am no pump expert, but I assume a chewed up impeller would make the engine work harder...less RPMs....but from what you have said, it looks not that bad, so you can dismiss that question.

Never thought of that, a hook creating a sh!tty ride, seems pretty possible. But like I said the hook is extremely small, especially considering the distance that the bottom of the hull is flat.

It's kind of hard to say at this point, but I could "feel" the bow lifting as I drove it, I could see the bow lifting as I drove it at the same speed, and I never touched the switch. I think the hydraulic ram is opening as it's being driven, not sure if that would be a worn ram, a worn pump, or both. When the ram opens: the diverter, the bow, and the rooster all go up which is what I don't want when I hit a wake from another boat. My passenger and I are pretty certain that I launched the boat yesterday over a pretty big wake, the first thing out of his 16 year old mouth was  ;D   ;D   ;D  followed by "I think we just caught air" followed by  ;D   ;D   ;D.

There was a fellow over on Hot boat who has one hell of a ride . A Kachina to be exact . Ran awsome until he decided to blueprint the bottom . He gets the bottom perfect and now the thing wont stop hoping . It used to do like 86 less the laughing gas and now could only get into the 60's I think before it felt too unsafe .

Anyways , as it turns out with some video footage , the boat was actually bucking . Not your typical bow hoping but the back of the boat was the culprit bucking up and down . Went from one extreme to another with his ride plate and wedges and I still dont think he's got it figured out . He might have , I dont know . Last I remember he was putting some hook back into the bottom of the boat . Enjoy tinkering with all that wonderfull adjustable hardware . These boats are very temperamental with hardware adjustments . Good luck .

Rod,

For what it's worth, the best setup on my Mach 1 has been:

- 2.5 degrees up angle on the ride plate

- I start my run at 2 degrees down nozzle as not to sky the nose
- Once the boat has settled down I change to 2.5 degrees up angle on the nozzle

I have an adjustable diverter stop for up and down travel

The angles posted are in relation to the keel.

Hope this helps,

-William

Very good to know info. Here's a stupid question, how do I measure the angles in relation to the keel? What tool(s)? What angle are the plates on your ride that are directly behind/on each tunnel? How do you measure the angle of the Diverter, is it also in relation to the keel?

to measure things in relation to the keel, get your boat (at the keel) level with a long level (3 feet or more so youre not leveling in the hook, but over it)...and use an angel finder on the ride plate like this one...

(https://forum.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.harborfreight.com%2Fcpi%2Fphotos%2F34200-34299%2F34214.gif&hash=794b5761aea7c9de7bd494d4f45f3bd20c78e01d)

about what omar said about squirtcha?'s boat, i have followed his boat and dont know what the ultimate resolution was, but i also do remember him having worse numbers after he took the hook out.

you can find the site where he blueprinted his bottom here:

http://jetboat.homestead.com/Kidsriding.html

also some good reading about 'spooning' water (and how NOT to set an intake):

Brad has explained how to correctly measure angles in relation to the keel.

My tunnel extension plates are parrallel with the keel, 0 degrees.

Did you ever mees with the engine location ? Will rod even have to worry about something like that ?

For my blown fuel application, I was told to put the engine as far back as I could get it.

I was told,  to move it up with more hp. To keep the boat more balanced and helps carry the weight better. It worked good in my old jet. But what do I know. I'm still working the bugs out of my twin! ;D

Either read the whole thread, ignore the thread, or maybe Brad will just delete it.

Today I fixed the plumbing so that I can attach a garden hose to the engine with re-plumbing it.
I changed the main jets from 70's to 76's.
I modified the throttle cable bracket so that the cable could actually reach full throttle.
I locked out my distributer and set timing at 36 degree's.

The engine is once again snappy as **** and with the additional throttle travel... I'm sure I added at least 20 mph to the project's W.O.T.  ;)

here is my take on all of this weight distribution talk....dont take any of it as proven fact, just what little information I have gathered.....also, some input given from a very wise man who has been doing this for a long time....

it all depends on the application of the boat...

Drag Racing - you want everything back....this keeps the boat as dry as possible so you have less drag in the water. if you run it forward, its going to make the boat run wetter....thus causing more drag.

Circle Boat Racing - you want to balance it out. You dont want to run too dry or the boat will spin out in the turns. I cant go into much detail due to some top secret testing going on, but there is a sweet spot for a motor to be mounted that will help balance the boat out for circle boat racing.

Hot damn! I gained allmost one complete mile per hour on W.O.T..  >:(  Next stop, the compression check zone!!!   >:(
Title: Re: Mach 1
Post by: hotrod56cars on August 31, 2007, 07:29:39 AM
I did the compression check, the numbers ranged from 130 to 160. Yea, I know, it's too wide of range of numbers for a fresh rebuild. It just doesn't matter anymore.

I changed the distributer cap, coil, rotor, and ignition module. I tested every spark plug wire and they are all testing good. I took the boat to El Cap for another test run. The engine lost the ability to idle at 800 RPM and I had to raise the idle to about 1400 RPM. No change at W.O.T..

On the way back in to the dock at 4,000 RPM marcsrollin and I started hearing a engine knock and looked back and there's what appears to be steam coming out of the valve cover breather. There's an oil "film" or "spray" all over the back of the boat and engine. I got home and pulled the breather out, shined a light into the valvetrain, and I don't see any milk in there. Fired the engine up and there's no knock. It's still got "steam" coming out the breather.
Title: Re: Mach 1
Post by: Ralph Brunt on August 31, 2007, 08:07:19 AM
the compression #'s could be due to the rings not being seated in yet as well as the steam/smoke from the breather, just a thought
Title: Re: Mach 1
Post by: The Chaz on August 31, 2007, 10:17:51 AM
Steam might have been condensation boiling out of the oil.  Oil on the back sounds like a gasket blew :'(  I had a "knock" only under load from valve/rod length/worn rocker issue.  I'll bring my angle finder on Sunday for you to El Cap.  Does the builder warranty his work as far as gaskets being blown?  My compression varied about that much for about 3-4 hours of run time.  What impeller do you have in there?  May need one that will let your engine turn to higher RPM's it might just not be making good torque at the lower end.
Title: Re: Mach 1
Post by: hotrod56cars on August 31, 2007, 05:22:38 PM
The engine's builder is coming over to my house, probably tonight, to check it out. The builder isn't concerned about the "steam" at all. Not sure what, if anything, will be accomplished by that since it doesn't have a knock on the trailer.

I have no idea what impellor is in my pump, the pump rebuild/inspection was part of my plans for the winter.

As far as I'm concerned, this project is on hold for at least a month. The way my finances sit right now, everything this month is good but September's bills I'm expecting to be about $1600 behind. Desert season is right around the corner and my family's desert toys are just like my family's summer toys, AFU. At least the desert toys are cheaper to fix plus I have a lot more experience with them. Nothing like putting in $1800 into a engine just to watch it suk asss and then fuk up, but I'm sure everyone on here has had that experience (except marcsrollin).

The engine's builder came over tonight and looked at the engine with me. After he listened to it run for about 10 seconds he had a look on his face that can only be described as crooked eyebrows.  He walked around the engine and then walked back over to the side he started on, listened to it for a few seconds more, and then had me shut the engine off. He told me that the number 2 cylinder wasn't firing. We did a compression check and it read 0 PSI. Took off the valve cover, checked out the valves, springs, locks, pushrods, rocker arms, and all looks good. Next we pulled the plug for number 2 and looked in with a flashlight. It looked like we were looking at a piece of lava r4ock made out of aluminum. We can't see a whole lot through the spark plug hole but the piston in number 2 is waisted for sure. As of right now, we don't know why. The engine is getting removed before the middle of next week.

Does a vacuum leak cause detonation?  ???  Anyone?   ???

I had a mechanic briefly look at the engine in the Mach 1 this morning (he's here to fix the family boat's water pump and eratic running condition). He said it looked to him like there was a bad vacuum leak on that cylinder. He asked if the heads were surfaced (yes), asked if the block was surfaced (yes), asked how it idled (didn't idle very well at all), asked if it had any popping out the exhaust (yes), I then showed him the cylinder head and he looked at the gaskets and said that he could tell the gasket wasn't sealing and then he showed me how he could tell.

Wouldn't it be great for my wallet if the piston melting wasn't my fault? (Hey! A guy can dream can't he!?!)   ;D

Pray to the engine Gods for me, would ya'?

BTW, I trust the engine's builder and he'll tell me the what's and why's and how's that caused the problem. (But pray to the engine God's for me anyway.)   ;D

A vacume leak, did you call Hover on this ?
I have no idea hat I am talking about but I asked my daughter and she says.
Actually a vacume leak will cause a particular cyl to go leen if it is at the intake to head area, if if is at the carb to itake it will cause all cyl to go lean at high rpm.

I dropped the engine off at the engine builder's house, stood around while he tore it apart, #2 piston is completely waisted and the cylinder got scored pretty bad but the builder said it will be fine for my ap., the parts are probably at the machine shop still...

The engine's builder went through a lot of different reasons as to why something like this would happen to an engine. He's charging me $200 to tear it down and put it back together again. For $200 and my lack of knowledge it sound s like a deal to me. If it happens again...  >:(

You didn't need to 2nd Day that $, no worries, they're just sitting in a box waiting for you...

The builder said it won't be a problem to match the waisted piston up, .030 bore, stock rod length, Sealed Power forged, can't find the part number 23__... I've got another smoked BBC that came with the boat, that one is a two bolt main, cast crank 454, missing one rod and two pistons. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with that engine yet. I got a text tonight that the engine is done, again. I need to pick it up tomorrow.

I was using 1/2 of the gas 87 octane ( I had my reasons) , 1/2 of the gas 91 octane, and 1 can of octane boost per tank (11 gallons each I think ), it melted a psiton. I guess at the least I should go to 91 and octane boost, I'm definately not going to run any 87 in it anymore. It has somewhere close to 11: 1 compression, any suggestions on gas/octane boost? Thanks, in advance.

I'm going from a Holley 800 mech sec DP to a Holley 830 mech sec DP, differences are the 30 cfm and the 830 has bigger annuaral (sp?) boosters. I'm going to keep using the HEI because it's simple and there is no reason why it wouldn't be adeqoute to do the job of ignition. But I have a MSD marine dist, a MSD 6AL, and a Blaster 2 waiting for it.

If it doesn't break 65 mph  :-[  :P  this time then the pump is coming apart. Last time it was 49 mph at W.O.T..  >:(

I have been working on my '32. I am currently having problems with the sheetmetal I am working on warping due to heat. Specifically the door jams I am building. They need to be "right". I need to figure out how to straighten twisted and bent metal using heat and water and restrained force. I have forgotten more than I remember. I may have to redo it all and work slower next time.

I'm assuming you're "stitch" welding the sheet metal in your jambs? Are you using MIG or TIG? or OXY/ACET?  If you're using any of these systems and still getting warpage then maybe your heat is too high, also don't use water to "cool" the metal (unless you're adept at metal shrinking) I use a wet towel on the areas around the weld, it acts as a heat  shrink. Let the metal cool naturally.

Here's a pic of the last hotrod I built;

I'm using a 110 mig w/no gas (flux core wire). I've never been taught what stitch welding is but I tacked it (over and over), first about 3 inches apart, then I put another good deep tach in the middle of that, etc. etc. etc. the whole time moving along the ? 2 1/2 ? foot long door jam. It took me about 20 minutes to weld the jam onto the door skin. I remember a lot more now that you've typed the above. Thanks.  ;D  The jam slightly twisted and curved during the process of welding it together.

Nice hot rod!

A very rough photoshop draft of my goal. Different wheels and tires (15 X 5 smoothies in front with 15 X 10 smoothies in the rear, caps and rings). Longer bed on mine too.

I've heard Marc say about 1,000 and 1 times "you're going to regret cutting that top off". I just don't want it to look like the other million flat black '32 - '34 ford pickups out there. I've got it figured out in my head how I can have a hard top roadster convertible, top on or off whenever I want it and look cool at the same time. IMO. But first the warping problem needs to be solved.

Wipe off the cobwebs on this thread.  :-*

I picked up a rusty Gen IV 454 today. 4 Bolt mains, cast everything, peanut heads. Heads and internals will be sold. I'm working on several different trades on the rotating assembly. Once I have the rotating assembly it all goes to the machine shop. I'm still figuring out "the plan" on what I want. Today I bid on a Crower mechanical fuel injection and I was serious enough that I was outbid by only one person. I don't have the budget for a blower. Maybe I should call TIMINATOR and see what he has... the end result will be either a 468 or a 496, all forged rotating assembly, at least 12:1 compression, all roller, 049 ported heads, and an unknown intake system. But then again I'm working on a trade for a 502 also...

Yea, I've read a little bit about them, sounds like a pain in the asss to set-up correctly.

The one that was on eBay was missing some parts and I was thinking maybe changing it to an EFI, but it doesn't matter anyways since I didn't win it.

Try to get a Crower if you go that route. You can go blower for what it would wind up costing to do the EFI. I would really like to see someone run a Crower out there. Who was it that was doing the EFI on his blower, I chatted with him a little.

I'm almost done working the bugs out on a trade. I'm getting a forged 454 GM crank, forged Manley H-Beam rods, forged Ross 13:1 pistons, CompCams solid roller lifters, and the matched flexplate and balancer for the balanced rotating assembly. Once I finish the trade I'll just need some machining, a cam, pushrods, and a carb. It'll be a 468. I'm seriously considering running E85.

Single carb/ premium gas / Good heads, pocket port, Streemline the valve guides, polish and match chamber to head gasket( takes me about 4hrs ) ,/deburr tops o pistons / then put an NOS system on it!!! :D / an ignition retard box will help ya get the most pwr without the system on.
A similar set up in my moms 69 nova, that I used for a bet, Without the NOS, went 11.2somthing @ get this....134mph!!!! Yep I won!!!! I smoked the tires through the whole 1/4. They asked me to leave!!! >:(

Completed the trade today. I'm wondering if 105 octane is enough for 13:1 compression...  ???  My heads aren't going to flow enough to accomplish what I want, so I'm going to have to go less fancy ($$$) on the intake system and buy bigger heads.

I assume yer talking about the E-85.?  If so yer in good shape. Clean up nthe chambers so there's no sharp edges and deburr pistons. The cooling effects of the E 85 helps prvent detonation. What heads do ya currently have? Open chamber? Double check piston to Cyl head/ valve clearance with cam degreed and one piston and rod in the block. thin layer of playdoo on piston/ slowly rotate/ cut impressions/measure. Yep, I'm referring to E85. I currently have 049 heads (open chamber, 118 cc, large oval) that have been ported but still have the stock sized valves in them. I'll probably keep them for a backup engine. I found a set of Merlin iron heads for $650 bare...

The Canfield heads have been sold, the guy finaly replied to my email. He didn't update his ad.

13:1 compression, 468, whatever heads I end up with will be capable of supporting 800 HP, dual Holley's, GM forged crank, Manley forged H Beam rods, Ross forged 13:1 pistons, an unknown at this time cam, and NOS. 800 HP won't be that easy but it shouldn't be that difficult either.

Anyone on this board know anything about NOS port injection, is it difficult to do yourself with the proper tools?

Unfortunately I had a real long talk with TIMINATOR today. He's a real friendly, knowledgeable, and very well communicative man. 800 NA HP + jet drive = equal triple digits <---- not so easy to do. It can definately be done, but the impellor would be like a B/C cut or worse, plus a inducer is mandatory. The engine has to spin some pretty serious RPM's to get that much HP (compared to racing BBC's spinning 9,500 RPM's). He said it will kill me in fuel ($). Hmmm... but my plan was to build the engine this year and get to the pump next year... the combination I am going with is already proven - in a v-drive...  :screwy:

I'm running out of time, I want to go to Parker in June. :banghead: Injection is nice but I'd rather be blown?  :banghead:  Make a decision and run with it...  :banghead:

Stick to plan A, stick to plan A, stick to plan A...  :banghead:  :banghead:

13:1 compression, 468, Merlin heads, dual Holley's or MFI  :banghead: , GM forged crank, Manley forged H Beam rods, Ross forged 13:1 pistons, an unknown at this time cam, and NOS.

:banghead:

2Savwanabe    :banghead:
just sell it all and buy my motor ;D  That way you can be blown and injected, just like you like   :banghead:  :screwy: >:D

What is the current cost of alcohol compared to gasoline?  It might be cheaper in the long run to real alcohol, not the E85 your thinking about.

Only problem from what I've been told is you would need about ~30 gallons to run the Parker Strip once.

Yep, mileage, or lack thereof, is going to be a problem. With as little as I go out to the river and itsn't going to make or break the river trip's anyway. I have no idea what alcohol costs or even where to get it, maybe A/A Paul will chime in... E85 is about $2.85 a gallon. One way or the other, sooner or later, I am going to reach my goal.

Thanks for the compliments... I forsee a lot of  :banghead: in my future getting it all "dialed in".  :D

I dropped off the heads today, guy was guesstimating around $400 to get them repaired. That's a lot more than I thought. I asked for a real estimate after the heads were apart. One head needs 2 new seats and 2 new valves. Both need to be surfaced, dissasembled, and cleaned. Another $150 and they'll switch all the valves to stainless.

+1 for PwTony

I got a call from Action Cylinder Heads in Lakeside CA today telling me that both of the cylinder heads that I had dropped off were cracked.   :screwy:  I thought that was kind of weird since one head had dropped a valve and the other head looked fine, but whatever. So I drove down to Action Cylinder Heads in Lakeside CA  after work to pick them up and pay my $50. I go to the counter of and they put two 049 heads on the counter and a box of "hardware" (term used loosley) and none of the "hardware" is mine. So I tell them my heads "had Crower 10 degree retainers and triple springs, what the hell is this crap?" So they tell me "oh no sir those are your heads and your hardware". So I say "give me my Phockin#!*(%#@  hardware that I had on my heads, Crower retainers and triple springs"  " So after 10 minutes of them phukin around in the back they bring me my hardware. The whole time their screwin around I'm looking at my heads. One of them isn't mine (the good one I had wasn't on the counter). Story's getting long so let's just say     :banghead:    :banghead:    :banghead:    :banghead:    :banghead:    :banghead:

I left with my hardware, my phuked up head, and thier phucked up head. I was so close to throwing the head that wasn't mine at that fat curly haired phuk's face.

I should have listened to pwTony.  :banghead:   :'(  Anyone got a pair of BBC heads for sale?  :sly:

There's two places that I KNOW in east county that do good jobs. And both of them you can talk about horsepower for hours and which direction to go.

There's where I used to work, and I know first hand no work is second to none.

It's MMAD In El Cajon

My daughter's car took a dump today, timing belt. 1.6 liter Ford Escort. I will find out tomorrow if it needs just a new belt or a different engine. It's a interference engine meaning that if the timing chain breaks 99% of the time the pistons will collide with the valves. It doesn't really matter though either way, as whatever repairs her can needs will come out of my jet boat money. It was already borderline if I had the cash to finish the jet boat's engine this year anyway. I'm done with the jet boat for this year. Oh well, sh!t happens.  :banghead:  :)

Aside from the cost of gas to get it here, I've had Jim Grubbs Motorsports in Valencia, CA do all of the above to 4 blocks. First two he charged $160 each. Second two were $100 each. Did a great job and he stands by his work 100%. He used to build the engines for Teague Custom Marine until Teague had enough lessons taught to them on how to build their engines and Bob started building them himself.

I've had two friends that had something go wrong with their complete engines from Jim. The first was overheated at doing an 11,000 RPM run with a 500 N/A 4.6L ford- NOT JIM'S FAULT. Jim replaced it at his cost.

The second was a small block Chevy that pulled out a stud. Again, a common problem with a standard 350 Chevy making lots of power. Jim just finished replacing it at his cost. He stands by his work whether or not it's failure was his fault. A lot of big names use him.

Sounds like a good place to go for machine work UNDONE.

I got a call from Ed Hale Machine today and the block is ready to be picked up. That means the pistons were all checked and they're good to go. Tomorrow I'll do just that. I also won a pair of valve covers today on eBay. Brand new and exactly what I was looking for. Less than $75, shipped. I'm looking at a more reasonable cam, the current one is around 650 lift and 260 dur at 050.

If anyone knows of a cheap way to plumb for alcohol I'm all ears. I have that MFI, it's got a lot of gadgets and doodads that came with it - all of which need to be plumbed.

My tanks also need to have fuel return lines added to them (1 each). What's the right way to do that? I'm concerned of an explosion welding on the fuel tanks, I have never welded on a fuel tank... [attachimg=#]

Sounds like you got a good deal for all that block work. Total Performance charged me $480 for the same work on one of my 340's. And they DO their own machinework there.

Sounds like alot of cam, hope you have some bitchin heads to help it out

I used to inspect many blocks that came from Ed Hale. He used to do all our block work other than decking and line honing, that is what I did lol. He mainly just bored them and hot tanked them because we didn't have their machines. So I can't speak for all of the work, but as far as bores go he was OK, nothing perfect or outstanding, but definetely runable. Out of probably 40 blocks I had checked over during assembly or shipment I don't think I found one that was soo bad we had to send it back. Have sent back many cranks to Beans Crankshafts though. And when my block was bored at Total Performance, I was more than happy with the job they did, as far as bore alignment, main cap alignment, and sizing went. They were pretty darn on the money. I didn't have an accurate way of checking the deck at my house though so I'm not sure if it was good or not.

I think Rod's best bet is to buy some Measuring tools, mics, dialbore guages, and dial indicatiors on a magnetic base. Because you ALWAYS have to check over what the machine shop did.

You have to time the questions for maximum effectivness. You know, ask like 10 questions dealing with random torque numbers 1/2 way through setting the lash or the middle of a head torque or timing sequence. Make sure it's something they have to stop and come back to, and they can't remember if a step has been done.  Good times.

Oh yea, there you go...  >:D  so while the head is being torqued down in 3 step incretments by Terry you're suggesting we all (watchers) discuss the relative expected changes from different prop sizes, prop pitches, prop blade amounts, mixed in with different under AND over drive gear ratio's available for all of the different manufacturers of v-drive units... but making sure to throw a lot of numbers out in the air while doing it!?! Everytime someone comes over to "help me" or "just gonna watch", they either screw me up bad enough where I undo EVERYTHING that was done that day, or more commonly, I spend the next week or two getting back to where I was before they came over!

Nothing like having someone who knows nothing about engines or mechanical stuff convincing you you are wrong (which of course 2 days later, you confirm you were right in the first place), or worse, breaking something like a locating dowel pin off inside your brand new half assembled fully machined $5500 Keith black aluminum block while you are in taking a piss.

Everyone wants to see my "secrets" so to speak and learn to build engines with me. I never advertise when I am actually building anymore, it ends up costing me money if I do. Nowadays I say, sure come on over, I was just finishing up. My wife is the only one that seems to be able to build an engine without f'in everything up or screwing me up in the process (yes - the wife builds engines too, she built the one in my 12 second van, and the right side of the 452)

I do the major stuff beforehand, and leave the little crap like VC and intake installation or maybe even lash settings for when people are over.

That pod is huge and creates some drag. I don't want to move the intake, just shorten the pod.

I think adding a spacer and a roost booster is adding more drag to the water you are trying to push than the pod is creating stability .  :-\

Yea I don't know what the hell I'm doing, seriously.   :banghead:  But I removed a droop and installed the spacer and Rooster Booster, so the water output out of the jet went from a 7 (up) degree to a 3 /12 (up, I think 3 1/2 ) degree, and also there is no droop to the spacer and the Rooster Booster - straight out of the pump until the water hits that mild Rooster Booster up degree angle. As far as shortening the pod goes, I just wouldn't feel right about the project until I cut it all up  :D  and the pod to me looks ugly sticking out so far. Someday, I'll shorten that pod without moving the intake. I could never copy this boat ($$$) but the pod does look a lot better than the pod on my boat. IMO

Title: Re: Mach 1
Post by: hotrod56cars on April 25, 2008, 06:21:54 PM
Why the spacer? ...

(Prefix: old style Dominator bowls have a smaller output than Berkeley bowls and the Rooster Booster is for a Berkeley bowl.)
The spacer is there because I can never seem to create enough headaches for myself...  :banghead:  I got the bright idea  :banghead:  that instead of doing it right  :banghead:  and removing the bowl from the pump to have the bowl machined to accept the Rooster Booster made for the Berkeley bowl I could just add the spacer and it would all bolt up at that point.  :sly:  Didn't work of course  :banghead: because I ended up machining the spacer to work anyway.   :banghead:

... The boat your COPYING  :screwy: doesn't have a space or does it? ;D

If you're using the word copying very loosely you'd be right, but if you're referring to copying like copy and paiste you'd be waaaaay off as the blue and white Mach 1 has 4,000+++ HP, a almost completely custom made pump (maybe not in that picture), and undisclosed changes to the bottom of the hull... BUT the pump's bowl on the blue and white boat is considerably longer than the bowl I have so the spacer with my bowl is actually closer to that blue and white boat's bowl without the spacer.

My head hurts.  :D

They haven't been made in a long time, it extends the nozzle out a little further, no droop to it, and has a 3 1/2 (I think) degree up angle on it's output. Circled in red.

There is no clear advantage to running a Rooster Booster, a droop, a straight snoot, or any other nozzle extension device or water diversion device on all hulls, it's only what works best for each individual hull. The only way to determine that is through testing of each piece on the hull until the best performance is achieved (which I didn't do when I ditched the droop snoot for the Rooster Booster).

If I do the top end myself I still won't know how to/have the tools to check pushrod length/geometry, piston to valve clearence.

Marc put together a couple of stock engines in front of me (when I was on the injured list) and I have also put together a couple of stock engines by myself but with a stock engine things aren't nearly as critical. Huge domed pistons, lots of lift/duration on the cam, retro-fit roller set up are all totaly new to me. I think the engine builder I know will do it for $500, I think. He hasn't returned my call yet. Plus I still want to talk with Terry some more, maybe he thinks we can easily do it in one weekend?

Yea I'm just using a regular stainless bolt. But since I'm not interested in a loss of steering control  :o  I want to get a longer bolt so I can put two nuts on it to lock it on.

That would be great to do. But I think in most cases it's about the money. IF you're tight on money, then it's cheaper to go to a shop (plus you can take it back, if theres a problem) Then just spending double and doing it with a buddy (in Rod's case) ;D
i'm pretty sure terry knows what he is doing, plus you get to learn how to do it yourself next time. if you think there wont be a next time you are WRONG.

Aside from BAE's bottom being completely diffrent and him having to run a set-up that needs to keep the ass end buried or else , I think your well on your way to shooting yourself in the foot . never said terry didnt build good motor! Just that it would be double the money for Rod to go to him. If terry is go to teach him (THAT"S GREAT) for free cool. But to just the motor to him and going two or three weekend to him. Rod can go to his buddy for $500 buck and be money head. And why can't the rod's buddy show him here. Plus the 500 he would save can go to more parts for the boat. Just my .02

The engine builder that I've used before returned my phone call shortly after making my last post.  :sly:  He said he'd put my engine together for $400, smokin' deal IMO. But I owe Terry a lot of parts which I still need to deliver and he has my cylinder heads... soooo either way I'm making at least one trip to Terry's.

This is the sik-est thing to rarely hit the water.  :D
[attachimg=#]

Last time out the engine blew and spewed oil everywhere, it's been sitting covered ever since. Today it got moved to a more "workable" location. Filthy is a huge understatement.
[attachimg=#]

I'd be a lot better off getting off this computer and actually getting something done, like replacing the fwd/rev cable.
[attachimg=#]

You don't sit "in" this boat, you sit "on" this boat, and although the picture probably doesn't show my point, it does show where the driver's right foot sits, where the driver's left foot sits, and more importantly the uncomfortable difference between the two. I have no idea what to do about it because I never go anywhere and see how other tunnels are rigged.
[attachimg=#]

I want to move the seats back a few inches but in order for me to do that I need to move the gas pedal and make the steering stick out further. Maybe in the next 10 years or so it'll get done.  :banghead:

This is a Ghetto Hydraulic Place Divertor Control, Radio Shack less than $5.

The difference between this
[attachimg=#]

and this
[attachimg=#]

Is a lot less than you might think. The steering cable spacer that was used with the droop it had. I never moved my steering cable for the swap.
[attachimg=#]

The old set up had a Berkeley droop and a 4 degree wedge, so the water exited (sp?) the pump, went up through a 4 degree wedge, went down the droop, then went up the droop's 7 degree output, and then out the divertor. Now the water exit's the pump, goes straight through a spacer, then up a 3 1/2 degree Rooster Booster, then out the divertor. The water flow is much straighter now and technically the divertor is only 1 inch higher in the water.

Next up...

A friend of mine showed up today to talk about some stuff and whatever and these seats are now going to be a thing of the past.  :o  Don and Ghan (sp?), I can not thank you enough.
[attachimg=#]

Don's girl bought a sewing machine that can be used on vynl and she just sewed Don an all new interior for him. Now, I'm going to do a little bit of side work for her on her home stereo system and she's going to sew me up some new seat covers. I am stoked beyond words. Should be done in a couple of weeks.

Rod , heres a pic of mine , its not much better (to high).  There has to be a better way  ??? .

That has to be better than having one knee in your chin and the other waaaayyy over there. I don't know, maybe not. I still can't bend my knee far enough to sit in the thing more than a couple of seconds. I have no idea what I'm going to do when the boat is water ready and I can't sit in it.  :banghead:  Maybe drive the thing with my left leg laying on the bow.  :screwy:

I'm not saying I know more about anything boat related, because I definately don't, but we'll just have to wait and see on the droop swap. Personaly, I don't think a air entrapment hull needs 11 degree's of lift. I think since I didn't open up that Dominator bowl that's what will give me more problems than the droop swap. Lot's of very fast boats with and witout droop snoot's. Anyone can run slow.  ;D

I cleaned up the boat today, I think it was the first time I've ever cleaned the floor. That black floor gets very hot! I just need to pull the stereo and woofer out that came with the boat and clean up the wiring a little bit and it's ready for an engine.  :banghead:

You are correct, good eye!  ;)  There is supposed to be Balsa floors under my carpet (previous owner claim). I was looking at my boat a little closer today and the gas pedal was moved forward  :banghead:  :screwy:  about 8 inches. Then I noticed the seats have been moved forward  :banghead:  :screwy:  at least 6 inches. The steering colum is too short and is missing a piece, I think the last owner bought the bought with the seats and gas pedal too far from the colum and instead of lengthining the colum he moved the seats and gas pedal. Either way once I have an extension for my colum I will be able to move the seats away from the dash pretty easily.  ;D

Moved the seats back 6", moved the gas pedal back 8 1/2", 6" extension/hub on the steering collum. Plenty of room, nice n comfy. There was a unused stereo below the dash which I finaly removed. The last pic it's dark outside because I had to install the steering extension/hub twice...  :banghead:

Damn I am frustrated as hell. I can't find any info on push rod length for a BBC with stock heads and a retro-fit roller cam. Cam companies are telling me there are too many variables. Excuse me? Stock Mark IV's use the same pushrods for a flat tappet cam, why wouldn't they use the same length roller cam specific pushrods? Did the valves magicaly grow or majicaly shorten when I switched to a roller cam? Does the roller cam bolt in a different location than a flat tappet cam? WTF?   There is no way I'm going to meet my wishfull deadline. By the time I figure out this easy answer I'll probably be out of cash, again.

I think the problem has to do with the roller lifters not being as standard as hydraulic/solid in height.  Each manufacturer has his own design and the roller lifter can vary by .100 or more.

You can get an adjustable push rod tool that is used to measure what you need.  If you have a measurement of what you need almost anyone can order what you want.

Just take time and money  ;D

I'm no expert on these Cheby things but I think the cam itself can be another variable .   If I remember right some of the big cams are ground with a different base circle (smaller) than stock  :-\

The fact that you are running a 700+ lift cam might have something to do with it. Come by my work and we"ll see if we can figure something out. I"ll call some diffrent cam manufacturers and see what they say. What brand roller lifters do you have?

Yesum. And also anything from doing a few valve jobs, or surfacing the head too far, wil result in needing or not needing a different pushrod. I don't understand how the manufactures already know how deep your exhaust seat is sunk in the hole, or how much it's been topped off anywhere from 0.003"- .040" . Get an adjusting pushrod so you can get them right the first time

:banghead:  X 1,000

Comp Cams calls the "Retro fit" pushrod length at 7.725" and 8.684", that should serve as a base line, but as previously mentioned you should get some length checking pushrods and roll it through a couple of times to get the correct length for your engine.

... and there you go! The one factor I never thought of.

Thanks for all of the feedback, it was all good.

... What brand roller lifters do you have?

It's a Crane cam and Crane lifters. I personally called and talked to Crane this morning, extremely helpfull people until I didn't get the answer I wanted to hear. I have to wait but what a phukin pain in the asss.

Basicaly it seems that the crank gets installed, number 1 rod and piston get installed, cam gets installed and degree'd, cylinder head above number 1 cylinder gets installed, correct pushrod length figured out.

STOP. Order pushrods.

Wait for pushrods to come in.

Pushrods for number one get installed. Valve to piston clearence gets checked. Assuming all is good so far then the cylinder head comes back off and the "real" assembly of the engine gets started. Even if my above guess is off or not in the right order there doesn't seem to be a way to avoid the waiting.

I'm still frustrated but [attachimg=#] and life goes on.

I just don't get you Beerjet. You post sh!t up not to help but just to critisize. Usually, when you refer to my sh!t,  you have no idea WTF you're talking about. You read through a thread about Alcohol vs. Gas and post up you don't care what I think, then why in the phuk are you reading it? Why do you feel the need to post up you don't care what I think? Next up, you're telling me I'm going about my project all wrong, that nothing I have is correct for my app, then you ask me a bunch of questions about what I have because you don't know what I have. Now, you're clowning the stupid little bracket I made to hold up a cable off of my driveshaft, you don't offer any advice, you just clown the sh!t, and you still have no idea what the phuk you are talking about. Then to top it all off, you send me cool pix and text messages as if you like me as a friend or as a person. WTF? I don't give a phuk what the problem is, but if you have a problem with me then SPEAK IT. At Parker last year I helped you and anyone else out that I could help out, we've never seen each other since the AVI last year so once again, WTF?

For the bracket to wear through the cable, the cable would have to move within the bracket thereby causing wear, if the cable can't move in the bracket then there isn't going to be any wear. The cable doesn't move. There's no reason to allow the cable's housing to move. The cable is not being pinched. The clamp for the cable is of the correct diameter for the cable it's being used to clamp. Maybe I'm wrong, but I won't know if it's wrong until it fails or until someone who knows offers me advice. But if all I get is clowns looking for a laugh and a high five from thier buddies, phuk 'em all.  :-*

Have a nice day!

On a different note, I found a guy that is very local to me, he runs a jet drive tunnel hull, also runs a MFI, runs a BBC, also has achieved what I am trying to achieve, the guy is really nice and really helpfull who does all of his own work, he does pump and engine work for race boats, builds sand cars for a living, this could be a HUGE advantage for me in completeing my goal. The only problem I can foresee is how in the hell do you repay a guy back for giving you valuable hard to find information?

People call me gay and slow all the time , Do I care . No . Why ,

BECAUSE IT'S THE INTERNET ! . Thats why .

Besides , Can photochopped images of your boat to look like a freakin airplane really be considered post worthy in a projects forum . I have gone back and read every single page . The only thing you've done successfully is burn up a motor for some undisclosed reason , BTW .
Oh yeah , and you've bought some parts .

You told me to go back and read it , so I did . You really shouldnt let this "internet" get you all worked up  :'(

Beerjet, if the internet is soley a joke to you and all of it is to be taken lightly or with a grain of salt, then now we both know why I don't take your advice on my threads.

I'm a broke dik with no budget trying to reach a goal and keep the family with a roof over their head at the same time. My project is not a joke to me and neither is this thread but that doesn't mean I can't (or other's can't) joke around within this thread.

As far as what I have accomplished, why do you give a phuk? What's your list of achievements - wait nevermind because I don't care what you've achieved.

I've rebuilt a jet boat, while almost all people were telling me that I couldn't resell it at a profit when I was done with it, and then I sold it for a profit.. People just like you Beerjet, after all it's just the internet.

;)

The guy was really really cool. Picked his brain for quite some time. I got to crawl all over his boat and ask him anything about it. It was really enlightning (sp?). Problem is the same thing, never can make up my mind. Then once I make up my mind I find new information that I didn't have before and I start second guessing my original plan - again.  :banghead: Over and over and over.  :banghead:  Yes he has MFI, yes it's a tunnel jet, yes he's got a BBC similar in size to mine, yes it does well over a 100, yes he's running alcohol, yes he's out of gas really quick. He said (loose qoute, talking about both his boat and mine), "basically what you're trying to do is build a race boat that isn't a race boat, it's lay up isn't a race boat, you've got two seats in it, you're hauling a ton of fuel, it's all a compromise, you either want to go fast for a short distance or you want to go slower for a longer distance."

If those are my choices, I'm thinking that I want to go fast for a short distance, but...  :banghead:

Don't you suppose going slower longer might entail a motor that runs longer cheaper and more hassle free.  Tuning every trip gets old.  Just trying to make your head pop.   How am I doing so far?  ;)

LOL   :o   >:(

Yes, I think the desire for speed vs. cost of running are hand in hand. However, the boat I saw today hasn't had any re-tuning or broken parts for the last 3 years. Sh!t happens, but I've got some serious parts that will sustain serious HP. Wish me luck.

A see-through photoshoped pic of my plumbing plans. Yellow are vents, pink is fuel coming out of my saddle tanks and into my T tank. Fuel is pumped into the T tank via a Holley Blue pump that I have. Hoping for 27 gallon capacity. 55 gallon drum = 2 fuel fill-ups, 1 gallon for priming and spills, gets me to my sandbar, make 4 or 5 passes, and get back to the dock. Lots more plumbing to figure out.

I kept  :banghead:  against the wall. Sh!t (life) happens and I ran out of most of my money too early in my parts pile - no heads. So Terry and I struck a deal to get me a pair of heads and him some small parts he wanted. But I still was  :banghead:  because the heads Terry has aren't what I want, won't help me to accomplish my goal, and I would just be reselling them next year when I got the heads that will help my with my goal - losing money in the process. Like you would expect, putting stock Chevy heads on a barely Chevy engine isn't a bolt on so I'd have to dump money into the heads just to get them on the engine. So then I got the bright idea to buy a pair of heads on credit that'll help me reach my goal. Tomorrow morning I'm ordering the heads, springs, etc... One problem is the heads I'm going to order have smaller combustion chambers than the heads I was originally going to go with. So, unfortunately, the compression ratio is going up a bit and I'll be making a little bit more power than I had planned.  >:D

im not being a dick here, but i think you should maybe get some behind the wheel time before you attempt to start breaking triple digets. youre trying to fly when you havent even started to crawl yet.

i cant express this enough, as well as many others here.....get your boat in the water FIRST....then start worrying about putting your foot in it and getting triple digest.

youre trying to put the horse before the carriage. i could come up with a million sayings, which one will stick?

have you ever driven a v-drive? i know you have been a passanger in one and from what I was told you didnt enjoy it...

Yes, but only for a minute or two. It's very simple, I don't like being the passenger in anything that's fast. If I still had my 1100 Katana I'd offer you a ride as a passenger and scaired the phuk out of you easily, sh!t my 600 could have done that job.

... im not being a dick here, but i think you should maybe get some behind the wheel time before you attempt to start breaking triple digets. youre trying to fly when you havent even started to crawl yet...

You have the right to your opinion just as I do mine. But I disagree, I think you are being a dick here. I don't recall ever typing or saying that I want to jump into a boat and immediately go triple digits. As much as I'd like to flatter (sp?) myself, my balls aren't that big and it would definately take some seat time to get where I want to go. Hell you never know, I may never get the balls to go that fast even with years of experience. Speaking of experience (haven't even started to crawl yet), how's your first boat doing? Hopefully well.

... i cant express this enough, as well as many others here.....get your boat in the water FIRST....then start worrying about putting your foot in it and getting triple digest...

Who said any different? Not me.

... youre trying to put the horse before the carriage. i could come up with a million sayings, which one will stick? ...

Coming from you, none of the sayings will stick. Why would I let them stick? Your making judgments of me and you don't know sh!t about me, except for maybe what you've been told. If you want to make judgements on others from what you've been told about them, have fun.

... im not tellin ya what to do here, but your head has got to hurt from just clicking this " :banghead: " so much, let alone actually doing it. cuz its sure starting to make my damn head hurt from reading this thread.

I wouldn't listen anyway.

Well it's pretty simple from my point of view Brad. Either a person can build there own boat and learn while doing it, they can pay someone else to build it for them, or a combination of the two. If they decide to build their own boat, they can run what everyone else is running because it's easier (example: race gas) or the person can try and learn something (example: research different types of fuels - race gas, E85, alcohol, methanol).

And since your head is hurting I'm going to type out your response for you so your head won't hurt as bad. Pick one.
I've typed out a rant but I've decided it just isn't worth it.
I don't understand what you're trying to say.
I think you're putting the horse before the carriage.

The funny thing to me is that not too long ago you were trying to get back into boating because your family did it when you were a kid (just like me). You made some pretty stupid posts asking questions and making statements since then due to your lack of experience (just like me). To one extent or another you built your boat and had someone else do other work on your boat (just like me, High Life). Now you're trying to school me that I am stupid for thinking that I can put a boat on the water and immediately drive 100 mph even though I've never been near 100 mph <--- Hello? Is this thing on? When did I ever say or type that?

Yea Rod, lets get it runnin. Yer gonna need another $750 or so in gear, lifeline and helmet, to even drive it. I'm whitch you brother whatever you decide to do.

That's whats cool about you Terry. Thanks.

Does anyone know where I can buy much bigger nuts and a slightly smaller brain (can't go too much smaller than what I've got already, LOL).

Turning a tunnle jet tight is like jumping off of a bridge, as soon as you do it you thing why did I just do that!  They actally turn well to a point, but you never can tell when that point is (nothing like a vee bottom). I'm only able to speak for an aluminum tunnel though (20'6" Eagle Outlaw powered by a 540 Donavin) BTW not mine :'( They tend to want to "stand up" when all of the air leaves the tunnel, I would be willing to bet an "air entrapment" hull turns a lot better but I'm talking out of my butt because I've never driven one.

I've got a goal, I'm trying to be realistic about it and learn something along the way. It takes A LOT to get a jet to triple digits. I don't have A LOT.

I'd never race a jet in circles with the current board involved.

A year or so ago the nut job is asking if a small block can go in a jet boat, now the fool is doing 61 mph around a race track and wants to give me advice on how to reach triple digits, what an idiot. The pack on the track would go faster with one of those boats Jim's daughter drives, with Jim's daughter driving.  :banghead:  Get off my c**k B-rad.

Nah, this is the internet, where boys can act like girls and not get their assses whooped like those girls do in the real world. You know what I mean otherwise you'd have jumped in on popularity contest B.S. of this site a long time ago. You never have jumped into the B.S. on this site and you never will. I like your style and you've got my respect.

popularity contest? i guess it seems like it when youre the problem child of the site.

so you think that myself, terry valore, rodger finney, ralph brunt, omar archuleta, don cucci, toby clark, and anyone else who has put forth a POSITIVE FORWARD MOTION to the class is a reason not to join because your boy jim rich snivles because he was voted out of his self apointed title by the ENTIRE CLASS? So be it. You know one side of the story Rod, ask someone other then Jim as to what REALLY goes on. Trust me, I'm glad you'd never race if its anything like your docking skills.  ::)

omar is right....61 is faster then 49.... (it was 67 for the record)...and at least i didnt melt my piston by mixing bad gas.  ::)

I think you need a break. I hate to do this, but i have no choice. Its time to sit you in the corner again. Time out for Rod. You have been banned. Maybe someday I will let ya back when you decide to play nice.

Go ahead, run over to JJB, HB, RDP, PB, etc and talk your shit. Our paths will cross soon enough some day.
