JS...nice looking boat. I read thru your resto project, it turned out very nice!
When I bought my boat, the dealer was to busy to pick it up so he offered me a boat cover if I went and picked it up. So I drove down to Lemon St in the city of Orange. I met the owner at the time, but I am over 30 so my memory is shakie, but I will never forget the experience. That was 32yrs ago. The smell of fiberglass was overwhelming, and when he took me to the assembly building, there were 12 boats in various stages of construction, 5 of them were Tunnels, which, by the way, never saw 1 of them anywhere on the water. The smell of fiberglass was so strong you could get high 20' away, and we were chit chatting about it when he said this....."These are a great bunch of guys, but they don't take lunch, and they don't want to go home at nite.....I think they are getting way to high on the fumes." Pretty good laff over that one.

I would like to talk to futs about these boats, would be very interesting....

Again JS, nice looking boat....

This is my first post and it's for you Southwind Tunnel fans. Been lurking around for awhile and thought I'd share some stuff.......
Found this in a box in my attic....an advertisement from Berkley Jets..
[attachthumb=1]

Here is 1/2 of the backside of this poster....

[attachthumb=2]

from the late 70's..

Well, no one has spoken up with what happened to the Southwind Tunnel when they went out of business...
The advertisement poster was a hint. The Place brothers bought the Hull mold, cut the jet extension off, re-did the deck, and the Placecraft was born. And according to my memory, went back out and took the world record again. Those guys loved that bottom and trusted it.
For JustSquirtin, (and anyone else) I'll copy that poster and send you one, it's something to hang in the garage. I got that poster when I bought mine and just put it in a box.
Also, for people that are looking to buy bare hulls, I sold mine in 2004 for $2800, turn key...........

Actually it wasn't the Place Brothers and they built their own mold.  Frank Place didn't have anything to do with Placecraft, just Bill Place.  They started with a Southwind, but they did more than chop off the pod and change the deck.  They also dropped the sponsons which was being done on any serious go fast Southwind.  Without the dropped sponsons, it teetered side to side during a pass.  We we looking for a hull to replace our Hondo Pantera so Southwind hooked us up with one of the old Going Places tunnels-Bill had already started Placecraft.  Bill  later gave us a Placecraft.  You can see the sponson additions on the pic of the Southwind.

Done That , great thread, great info and insight love the history , maybe you or splatter know more on the Mach1 contrasted to the SWTD ? Tim (Place) talked about a small rift with Frank and Bill and from what I recall they (Place) ran a Mach for a while back in the day Tim sent me this pic when I told him I had one ,bottoms are similar ? mine has a drop keel and sponsons are down 1.5 in any info is appreciated Tom

Man, that was a long time ago.  I know that Bill and Frank had a falling out.  I think they were together in the Southwest Paving Spcl. days, but split when Bill ran Going Places.  Frank did run a Mach1 and I think the bottom was the same as a Mod'ed up Southwind or original Placecraft.  I'm not sure though.  Those days were cool in BFJ because there were so many different designs-good and bad.

Here's a pic of the same Soutwind we ran when Bill had it.  You can see the sponson difference.

Also a pic of Rated X running a Sleekcraft and our Hondo.

I don't know how many of these they built, but Kurtis made a flatbottom jet back in the mid 70's.  I'm sure some else did too, but this is the only one I remember.

C'mon bro, you dont need to apoligize to me.... I aint gonna hide from the truth! lol
I've been told that this year 2010 wont be as good a year for us Local 12 Operators... so Im not doing any spending untill work picks back up.
As the boat sits right now, its about 2 years out from where I want it.
As far as this season goes... just gonna throw in some higher compression pistons (8.1 now) and call it a day!
I just want to be able to attend these gathering with you guys this summer since I got such a late start on it last year. ;D

And what a grand summer its already shaping up to be! Glad to have your commitment on the comraderie! (thank gawd I have 2, nearly 3 running boats, back to 1 and 2 nearly running with Moo down right now  :thumbdown:) But I'll make them!  :thumbup:

You don't have to have a boat to attend these things, but it helps. (I have a problem with not showing up with a boat, but that's just me! I SHOULD have that problem given my inventory).

Next event (for me) is the Bartlett Lake gathering from the PB Eastsiders (some of you should see this!) in Feb, then Temple Bar, Memorial day at Sag, Fathers day at Big River, on and on and on........ ;)

You're in good shape Nate! Love your sled, and it's gonna be with you awhile! Leave it alone and go by your plan. Don't even try and compete with Boost on his timeframe. He has such a head start, for one, and I surmise Brian has quite a few things under cloak in that thing!  ;) Gonna be a runner to be sure! It was before he decided to mess with it some more! (And prime for stealing ideas for YOURS!!!)
