I guess the best way to describe what I got here is a gouge. I have 3 of these on my hull. What would be the best way to repair it? I was thinking Marine Tex then use a Gel coat repair kit? If anyone has any tips, they would be greatly appreciated.  I have included a picture of the largest one, none of them leak.

grind it out clean... when i did a few of mine i used a countersink drill bit.  u can feather the edges out but use some pretty coarse sand paper, give it plenty to grip to.  then i mixed up some gelcoat.   then fill the hole and leave a little excess.  once its nice and hard yer gonna sand it smooth (preferably with a block), then wetsand it, and the polish it.   


with that yellow you're gonna have to play with some of the tint and do some test splotches on something until you get the color right.  gelcoat color changes as it cures.  also polish the area nearby it so that it matches the clean polished surface color, not the dingy dull one before color matching.

So grind it just enough to clean it up then add gel coat only? I don’t need any filler?

Color matching will be the problem. If that is the worst thing you have to deal with, in that pic, on original gel, touch it up with some body filler and get a few "samples" from the local paint shop. Just my opinion, but no need to rip up the rest of the boat for that. Pickle has FAR worse dock rash from the previous owner, and I choose to leave it alone. Gives the boat character and history, for one, and also makes it so I am not afraid to scratch/gouge it myself.

To each his own, but IMO, when you make it perfect, you won't run it/float it for fear of hurting it.

If they don't leak, leave them alone. Touch 'em up if you feel necessary, but I like drivers VS traileer queens. We all make good fun of Hallett Dave, that he enjoys,  but I will tell you this, yes, his boat is absolutely beautiful EVERY time you see it, and yes, he is also NOT afraid to run the living hell out of it, hitting rock bars, whatever. We cannot all afford the repair bills on such things that he has. I think even Dave would "approve of this message".......

Thanks for the help guys. Im not too worried about color matching because its on the hull. For me yellow is yellow down there and if plans go well the whole boat will have new gel within two years. I just don't like seeing the glass. Ill grab a gel coat kit and have at it. My only concern was if I needed to apply a filler of some sort before the gel kit.

crystaliner in costa mesa ca sells exactly what u need... Its a liquid fiberglass putty that has fiberglass beads in it and it comes colored ( for get coat) !! so just pick the yellow jar ( costs about 7 bucks ) you activate it with there resin hardner. Drys hard as a rock, sandable and water proof once its cut still!!   It has the consistancy similar to bondo, so just fill it in, let it dry, sand it smooth and wala!!  all fixed and its yellow! no need for any painting ..

* to prep it all u would need to do is scratch the gouge with 150 grit ( only so the product has something to bite to) , and then clean it with acetone and its all ready..


I just used it on the bottom of my hull to fill in scrapes and gouges, bottom of my hull is white so i picked up the white jar of the stuff and it worked better then i could ask for!

Well now that sounds like an easy solution. I checked there website and the only problem is they're only open when I work... just like Bassett Does anyone else sell something similar online or local that's open weekends?

Filled a few holes from mounts and such with marglass and marine epoxy. I bought a small air brush kit(compresser/pen gun) from harbour freight and matched the gel to paint, blended the color and then clear coat. Wet sand and buff...all good.
