My buddy's got a 21 foot I/o merc 5.7 in it what happens is we hook the hose up to test an none is coming out the exhaust now I'm not an I/o guy so anything helps thanks guys

The impeller on a stern drive (especially a Mercruiser) realistically should be replaced every year. We change ours every other without fail.

If no water is coming out at all, you need the whole kit, housing included.

The water pump is in the out drive if it is an Alpha I, but on the engine is a Bravo I or Bravo III.

The Alpha pump would be Gen 2 and should be a http://www.westmarine.com/buy/sierra--water-pump-kit-for-mercruiser-stern-drives--3735602  You will also need some gear oil for it because you have to drain it to replace the kit...  Stick with GL5 synthetic 90 wt. The Merc stuff works great...

 make sure to put the drive in forward gear before trying to remove it.
