Ya we have two sides to our shop, we have a stainless side for like commercial kitchens and what not, than we have the architectural side. All commercial/industrial. I think the union guys top out at like 35ish plus there benifits and pension and everything on top of that. And then for non union guys is really depends on skill level and the company u work for I guess. I would say anywhere from 30-40. Plus we do a lot of PW. So thats like 52.46 or somthing in sd county.

Did your separations class help you get your resume set up? There are so many career choices being a vet. I'm by no means trying to sound like a d-bag, but if you're looking for a "job" hit Home Depot... Now if your Looking for a career, Start sending that resume out brother. I'll be finishing my 8 years up in August and I have already applied to Operating Engineers, Electrician Union and gonna be setting up an account on BNSF's website. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I could only imagine how sketchy it was getting out after 8 years man. I'm nervous as all hell to start from the bottom again at 26 yrs old. Have you thought about going reserves?
I noticed you were a mechanic while active. Check out BNSF man, could definitley be a good career with excellent benefits. Again lmk if I can do anything to assist in your hunt.

If you received a disability rating of 30% or more, you can have VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION (VA) help you land a career...they also may help with living expenses, education, etc...

if your not collecting disability compensation and you feel like you WANT to (anything in your medical record can be claimed...sore back, tinnitus, etc) make a claim, feel free to PM me and I can give you sone pointers...example: im at 40% disability. 30% for anxiety and 10% tinnitus(ringing of the inner ear). I collect tax free just under $600 a month..its not alot but hey, its a car payment or a place diverter lol

River rat is right, use all of the benefits we have earned. If you haven't gotten rated start the process. It will take a long time to get thru the system but it will pay off later not only with a few extra bucks monthly but the VA healthcare system is pretty good and free! I am 70% from multiple deployments to Iraq as well as Afghanistan hence my screen name Brokedik, it's what we called all the old broken down soldiers who couldn't jump anymore (now I'm that guy). Lol

That being said I will get back to your question. First if you haven't already used your GI Bill use it. If you don't have a preference look into University of Phoenix. They have many locations and you only go to campus one night a week for 4 hours. That will get you 2k a month for three years and you can still search and work a day job. You will also look more enticing to future employers.

Second search USAJOBS daily. It has all of the government and state jobs listed every day. I own ,y own company and make a good living but if I had to do it all over that is what I would do. A federal job is the best. Funding almost never gets cut just reassigned, you will have the best benefit package around(it will become important later) and most of all it's usually easy work with good pay. The key to being successful with federal jobs is having a clean record and don't stop with the education until you have a masters degree. Having military experience is a huge plus and will get your foot in the door. Just don't give up, stay in school and milk the GI BILL for all you can.

I know it sounds crazy reading it saying get a masters but trust me its not that hard at Phoenix. I have earned my bachelors and now working on my masters all while raising a family and owning business with 10+ employees. The key is dedication and persistence just doing it one day at a time. Use the skills you have learned in the military to nail your interview. Think of it as a promotion board and you need to explain how you know not only how to give orders but take them as well.

Don't settle now as a civilian cause real life only gets harder. Push yourself to get a career that has good future. If you settle for a job that pays $17/hr as a machinist, in ten years you will be a $17/hr machinist with 3 kids to feed (no offense if anybody out there is a $17/hr machinist ;-/ ).

Anyway that's my .02. I have given this same advise to all of my soldiers and I have already been to 3 graduations with a BA and 2 who got there MBA. All of them (myself included) came from nothing and had nothing when we started. We also all got thru it with no student loans to repay which puts us a leg up on everyone else. The military got their use out of us, now it's our turn to get our use out of them!!!
